    Afternoon all,

    Need a little advice

My machine currently has 512mb pc3200 ram installed. If i add 1gb of pc2100 ram will this speed up or slow down the machine?

    cheers

If your PC is currently running the PC3200 RAM at it's full clock speed then adding the PC2100 will reduce the memory bandwidth available (3200Mb/sec to 2100Mb/sec) and will probably affect performance.

The only exception to this is if you are doing a lot of RAM intensive work causing your PC to go into swap regularly. In this case the reduction of memory bandwidth would be offset by the performance improvements of not having to swap regularly.

Thats if the PC even boots or gets into windows when mixing ram types or such speed differences and capacities.

Im selling 1GB of PC3200 (Registered Ram) on the Forsale Computers Forum if you are interested.

    Thanks for the advice lads.

The machine is mainly usid for audio work, ie sequencing and sampling. Would this be considered ram heavy? I know it can run the cpu up to 80-90% when using multiple plugins but dont know about the ram.

Will probably abstain from putting the memory in for now.

Matts, no thanks unless you want to swap for said pc2100 module !!!!

You'll need to drop the memory speed to PC2100, in case your motherboard doesn't automatically do that for you.

Depending on your setup, it might even be running at PC2100 speed, even with the PC3200 memory in it.

The best way to see if it would affect your PC's performance and how, is to put the module in and see.

As long as you set it up properly there shouldn't be any problems with stability.

You'll see problems if you try to run the PC2100 module at PC3200 speed.

    What processor do you have?

If you have an AMD, the odds are that the ram isn't running at 3200 speeds, but at slower speeds. Tell us the specs of your processor, and we can give a more accurate answer.
