Hi, I'm thinking of buying a guitar and starting to learn. Just wondering if anyone could help me by recommending a good beginners model and realistic price range for a fairly good 2nd hand or new one? Thanks!

    Hi Gastropod,

the quality of budget guitars continues to improve, Yamaha, Squier and Peavey to name but three all do great beginners electric guitars.

Don't know too much about acoustics, perhaps Fitz, Giblet or Feylya could help here?

Johnson or Boorinwood make some nice budget acoustics.

I bought a Hohner Countryman acoustic guitar for €100 and it sounds great.
Don't need to spend much on acoustic.

I still use a €100 electric guitar Hohner fake strat-type yoke but its not great - terrible vibration in machine heads. I suppose it doesn't matter for a beginner though.

wheres the best place to shop for guitars?

was gonna be cheeky and say guitar shops but I'm above that (barely)

Best places are second-hand shops I think.

Whereevr you go, *ALWAYS* try before you buy.

Wherabouts in the country are you? Try to get someone who knows a bit about guitars to go along with you.

I shopped with a friend looking for a beginner acoustic recently. I reckon Yamaha do some of the best beginner acoustic guitars. Try Musician Inc. in Dublin. There is a beginner pack in Music Maker in Dublin (can't remember the make) but it was brutal in comparison to the similarly priced Yamaha.

Don't buy those 'Beginners Packs' - they suck big time. Put three things no-one sane would ever buy individually in a box and hock em off to beginners. For shame.
