Free File Servers

    Hey, I'm just wondering if anybody knows of good free file servers that can act as domain controllers for pcs running windows XP.

    A linux box running Samba (most distros come with it)

    IIRC - To have a domain controller you need NT4 whereas 2K and 2K3 use Active Directory.

    NT4 should be free - ie. you might be able to track down a copy not being used and the CAL's to match - of course you can't move an OEM license to a new machine and you can't buy OEM Windows server and down grade unless you take out software assurance within the first ~60 days (or whatever the current ELUA says on their web site)

    Mac's servers (expensive beasts) can share files to PC's not free - but after 10 (I think CAL's) you don't have to buy further licences for each client.
