My DVD ripping help

OK, I used to be big into buying DVDs and ripping to the hard drive into avi to keep them to watch again, handly.
But then, I recently went through a spell where I just bought them on DVD a didn't do anything with them.

But nowadays, it's been that long since I've done anything like that, I've lost touch of all the software I used to use.

For example, I bought "The Piano" recently, and I tried to rip the vob files, now the DVD ripping software converts it to 3:4 instead of 16:9 for some reason (and I used that piece of software regularly).

I was pretty good at encoding .vob to .avi, so I'm not looking for advice on that exactly, more so what application to use to use the right codec? (Vidimo was the best at that for me).

For the (understandable) purpose of preventing piracy, I'd happly receive responses by PM.

    S.

I've been using AutoGK lately. I don't rip many DVDs at all (buy them at the right price and they're relatively cheap) but my laptop HD is a generation 3 firmware locked one so I have to watch my favourite movie (have it on R1) on it occasionally. Last time I ripped anything was a few years ago back when it was 12 tools to do one job. Now it's just one and AutoGK is truly excellent.

i use a combination of AutoGK and AnyDVD. (or dvd decrypter if i want to get rid of any part of the movie)
install anydvd, copy the contents of the video_ts folder to a folder on your hard drive.
run autogk, choose this folder as the input folder, select your desired output avi file & file size, set the audio to 128kbit/s cbr mp3 or whatever bitrate you desire (use ac3 if file size isn't an issue). set it to shutdown when finished. then leave it ripping while you're at work:)

    quality little app

Good thread this; was just looking for some DVD backup software.

Question though, does it always take >hours< to rip and encode a film? I was expecting in this day and age that it could be done in (the film's) running time, or less maybe..

If you use xvid - turbo mode and have a >2ghz with at least 512mb of fast RAM you can encode in the films running time, unless you go for a 2 disc rip.

But generally, no, not using 2 pass encoding.

DVD Decrypter to rip, DVD Shrink to reencode and burn to DVDR, or DVDx to make DivX's.

you don't need anything else unless you're big into perfection. but you're really have to be into it to want more than you'll get from the above tools.

I haven't yet ripped a DVD but have been reading up on it and downloading software. I thought DVDShrink would rip as well as reencode but many people also use DVD Decrypter. Why not just DVDShrink?
