The original and the best! Sharper lines.

exactly, the old six was a work of art - muscular lines and a fantasic prescence, the new models are just nasty to look at - and the more 5 series I see, the less I like it, despite everyone telling me it'd grow on me!

I was going to buy a 635 CSi Highline recently but decided against it as there were too many small things that I would not have been happy with (water leaks, camshaft wear, ...).

very nice indeed... Theres a few people around where I'm living with the 6 series, all saloon models. Hadn't seen a coupe model until now. Must say I'm highly impressed. Maybe it's just me but in a couple of places it looks very Aston Martin Vanquish-esque.

I'll have one.. in err, every colour!

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 41,234 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

The E24 6 series was a coupe - there were no saloons - you are possibly thinking of the E12 or E28 5 series!
    See http://www.bmwworld.com/models/e24.htm

I was looking at that exact same 6 series on the web, think it was on CBG.ie kbannon.. class car..

I think your best bet for getting one in good nick is to look up north or in the UK,
lots over there to choose from..

I have to agree, the old ones are definitely nicer, however if someone was to hand
me the keys to a new 6 series, I would have no problems taking it off their hands..
just to be polite of course.. ;)

    you are correct - cbg.ie.
Seller was going to give it to me for €6k but I went up armed with a BMW specialist and we examined every square inch of the car.
These cars are prone to rust esp. arount the wheel arches and a new one could cost UK£650 + vat + fitting/painting.]
Wasn't too much rust on this but the water in the two rear footwells would require the entire inside to be removed to trace the source.

Had full leather (incl dashboard) & alpina wheels & front valance :D

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,763 Mod ✭✭✭✭ToxicPaddy

jeez that would have been a steal at 6k if the interior and the seals were all intact..

Ahh well, guess you'll have to start saving for the new model, at approx €130k a pop
something tells me it will be while before i get one.. maybe with my pension when
    I retire in about 30 years :D

Haven't a clue really.. Didn't get close enough to see the model. The new design looks lovely though, no matter which model it is.

I'm devastated. How can a company completely destroy every model in it's range in the way they look. These cars do not look like BMW's should. Sure, if that new 6 Series had a Jaguar/Aston or whatever badge it would probably pass but the point is that it doesn't look like a BMW and that also goes for the new 5 & 7. The 3 series is bad enough at the moment, i dread to think what plans they have for it in the near future...

saw a 645Ci last night on the M50 (he was taking it very handy, so i assume he is bedding it in) but it looked better than I thought it would but still not a patch on the E24.

Can't agree more - they've competely abandoned their design principles - the Hofmesiter kink was present on basically all models from the 70s through to the last 3/5/7 series and its just about a thing of the past now... (It was bacially the angle at which the rear window met the boot and with the kidney grille it was a trademark BMW design cue). Chris Bangle is mainly responsible, but the BMW board haven't done anything to stop him (bare in mind this idiot design the Fiat Multipla). I've yet to meet a BMW saleman/mechanic who actually thinks the new 5 or 7 look good! They've all said that sure it looks crap, but it handles really well... The main aim is to shift more cars to the US and to fleet buyers whose taste in cars resides just south of their colon.

On the subject of old BMWs does anyone have any info on the old E23 (1977-1987 7 series) 745i. Pretty cool machine by the sounds of it - turbocharged six cylinder engine apparently. I've never seen one of these and don't know if it was even sold in the UK/Ireland. Anyone know?

The turbo'd version was South African only afaik - shared an engine with an M1, one was present at a BMW Car Club meet about a year back, photos should be on the Irish Regsion section at www.bmwcarclubgb.co.uk

christ that M5 is bloody awful ugly, wtf are BMW at?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭kdevitt

Saw a new 6 convertible on the M50 this morning - looks completely naff.... actually thought it was one of the lexus convertibles from a distance. Actually, stick a Lexus/Toyota/Subaru badge on it and it won't look out of place...

Its not quite as abhorrently ugly as the 7 or 5 series, but ugly all the same. Should have been sold as an 8 series because it doesn't deserve to be the successor to the 6...

Actually i think you're quiet right there. Stick any of those badges on it and hey, maybe it would be a good looking Toyota or whatever. The point is that it doesn't look like a BMW should and for goodness sake theres no way that it deserves to succeed the previous 6 series.

I have to say well done BMW for having the balls to abandon the 70s as a source of inspiration the in twenty first century. If I wanted shark nose I'd buy a bloody shark nose.

The new line are distinctive and bold. Well done all round (even if it was bloody Englishman who designed them)

These cars have made a lot of enemies for Bangle because thousands of BMW traditionalists worldwide dislike their sharper-edged format and have even signed online petitions like one titled "Stop Chris Bangle" to voice their disapproval.

Not that the American-born Bangle cares much. Certainly he understands the naysayers' fear that he has changed their beloved Bimmers...

not they're not - they're **** - they look like any mass produced [insert name of bland family car here] crap that gets churned out for the masses who don't care what their car looks like...

Bangle might be American born, but he sure had an English accent and claimed to be English when interviewed by Jermey Clarkson.

However, I was mainly refering to the new 5, 6 and 7 series in terms of their lines and stance.

As for looking like the mass produced crap that comes out of every other factory, well duh, they are mass produced. But I don't hink you will find anything like this rolling out of a GM or Ford plant any time soon.

The new BMW designs have generally been panned by motor critics worldwide - they don't look like BMW's, BMW are where they are today because they had a loyal group of owners who kept them going - on several occasions they were close to being bought over or bankruptcy, so its natural that when some yank comes in and decides to design an American friendly version of a european car that there will be some annoyance over it.

May not see anything coming out of GM or Ford - but hows about Peugeot or Toyota? The back on the 5 series has more in common with the 406 than any BMW...

Of course some people will like the designs - but then again a lot of people are buying Hyundai Coupes and Renault Meganes

are we going to re-start the hyundai coupe thread again :D

if Bangles designs were that good why then have BMW decided to promote him out of harms way and reduced the "distinctive & bold lines" on future models?
Simple fact is that they were designed for Americans and the majority of BMW owners (globally) do not like them.

I saw two 6 series today one moving between New Ross and Waterford and the other parked in Bunclody. I did'nt think to much of it tbh.

called up to Joe Duffys yesterday and had a good gander.
it is absolutely rotten & has nothing in common with the marvellous E24 apart from the roundel badge
