is it better practice to write a number like 'one' or 1 in a sentence?

ie. the value of minus one gives a negative direction
or the value of -1 gives a negative direction

Would it be significant on the subject/matter you're discussing?

Say if you were discussing something in science or maths? Compared to an English essay?

it is to do with computers. Thing is .. if I put in numbers the whole thing will appear as numbers... I think it is mean't to be read.. it is for a thesis

In text it is standard to write numbers as words unless you are referring to unit values (ie. 100 kg, 20 miles etc).

For mathematical derivations and such numbers does fine.

For general text if the number is a single word then you use the word - with two word number you would usually use both words - but try not to mix numbers and words so not chopping and changing formats.

eg: three million people vs. 3,456,000 people

Since you mention the negative of unit then the other way is to look at literatre from the same genre as that which you intend to write. eg: If its maths then have a look at Lewis Carroll :D

If it's computers you may need to distinguish -1 and false etc. so words can have their uses.
