Only one Bank of RAM Recognised

I have just put a new mobo in my machine for the first time and everything went well but for one thing.

I have a DIMM of 256Mb PC2100 RAM in one bank and a 512Mb DIMM of PC2100 RAM in another.

When they are both in the PC will only recognise the 256Mb stick but when the 512Mb stick is in on its own it will recognise it no problem.

    Can anyone help me out?

The Mobo is an epox 8K9A7I KT400A with an Athlon XP 1800+

what happens if you switch them around? will is see the 512 and not the 256? if so maybe a dodgy ram slot..

if it is the above rma the board.. if its not then im unsure

I've tried switching them around .

It doesn't matter where they are positioned, if they are both in only the 256 dimm is seen but if they are put in individually there is no problem.

    Have you the latest bios?

I have this board and love it, but alas i have but one stick of ddr.

    Cheers tribble.

I'll give updating the BIOS a go and let you know how I got on.

Issues like I always resolved with BIOS updates.

Updated the BIOS, still the same.

    Any other suggestions?

Try emailing the motherboard manufacturer, or checking out their FAQ's etc.

IF the both work seperately, then the ram sticks are fine.

How many ram slots are there? Try putting ram into slot 1+2, then 1+3 and lastly 2+3. Thats assuming you have 3 slots. Some mobo's go mad if different ram types are in slot 1+2, so i hear.

My old computer couldn't take 2 different sizes (i.e. 64MB and 128MB) they had to be both the same (i.e. 128MB + 128MB)

Doubt this is the problem due to the newer chipset.... stranger things have happened all the same :)

Yea thats a good thing to try, has a chance of sorting the problem (fingers crossed).

Tried switching banks around, no joy.

Could it be anything to do with the CAS latency of the RAM?

One dimm is corsair and the other is crucial.

I really doubt its cas latency etc, but to test, setting everything to the slowest settings, and drop in both chips.

I presume when you put in both chips, only one is recognised by the bios. Therefore i think it could be a dodgy motherboard. Either e-mail your hardware provider (komplett or wahtever) and ask them about it, and if they can't fix it with software, then RMA the board.

You've tried everything i can think of.

I mailed Epox , they told me to mail komplett. I hope they can sort something out for me.

    On looking through Epox's site I found this;

EPoX recommends that all memory be of the same manufacturer. If using memory with one of our Dual Channel DDR motherboards, it is recommended that the memory be purchased as a dual-channel pair such as Corsair TwinX, Kingston HyperX kit, etc.

What a pile of ****e! I have to get more RAM from the same manufacturer now.

Ah well. Its faster than it was.

are you sure your mobo can handle that much RAM?

alot of boards are like that these days, just luck of the draw. Tho tbh, alot of older boards also had big problems with diff memory types, pays to read manuals and sites thoroughly really =)
