I-pod not detecting correctly

I've never used an Ipod and I've limited info on the problem but here goes.

Mate installed his ipod software a week ago but did not have the cables to connect it up. Bought cables and connected yesterday. Ipod seen instantly, he goes into contents of Ipod and installs from the ipod an i-tunes? program. He can see all his ipod based music and everything looks fine - reboots when instalaltion finishes and now the ipod WILL NOT be detected using the firewire connection. If you use the USB cable it gets detected as new hardware, takes an age to install and then windows hangs on the reboot after the 'please reboot to enable your new hardware'...

did a system restore and started agian but it's still the same problem...

My plan is to remove every single reference to the Ipod software and hardware wise and then try again, but does anyone use an Ipod and have had any problem similar to this before?

    Thanks for any help.

    B
