Are computers better at packing oranges?

this seems a bit odd to me, because when I studied condensed matter, we started off by examining the various crystalline structures, and packing densities. We were asked to prove that the packing density for spheres is 0.76 in the haxagonal formation. An example of such an arrangement in real life is the pyramidal arrangemets for oranges etc used in greengrocers.

Why does that make it seem odd?

It just seems to me like a case of re-inventing the wheel!

They haven't invented anything, just proved that it's most efficient.

Wasn't Keplers problem solved in 1991 by a Berkely maths researcher names Hsiang?

    [edit]
Haha, it was, but Hales wouldn't accept the proof...and funnily, years late after going out of his way to discredit Hsiang he now published his own proof.

    Gotta love the science community....

i remember hearing somewhere that Hsiang was a bull**** artíste, that his supposed proof had many holes that he wouldnt even acknowledge (or something)
