    Here's one from Unison:
Excrement smeared on home of gay man in Derry

Police in the North are investigating a suspected homophobic attack on the home of a gay man in Derry last night. Excrement was smeared on the door and windows of the house during the overnight attack, which following an assault on a homosexual man in Derry city centre last Saturday night. A spokesman for the Rainbow Project, a gay support group in the North, said the victim believed the incident was motivated by homophobia because he had also been subjected to verbal abuse. The SDLP's Patricia Lewsley, meanwhile, said the disgusting nature of the attack was testimony to the sewer-level minds of the perpetrators.
Charming. If I remember correctly, homophobia is a much bigger problem in the North than the Republic. This is pretty nasty stuff though.

I know it's a stereotype, but the north seems to be full of religious and social intolerance. There is the ongoing issue of religion and race in the north, and the amount of bitter sectarianism that results from discrimination based on both of these grounds. Why does it not surprise me that homosexuality also falls under this intolerance clause?

Education would seem to be the solution for this kind of mindless bigotry, but how can you educate people who perpetrate these vile acts?

Neither jurisdiction in Ireland can be considered religiously or socially tolerant. Homosexuality was only decriminalized in 1993 here because the Irish government was forced to do so by Europe. Other threads on this forum give abundant evidence about the enthusiastic enlightenment our elected officials bring to the question of equality in partnership legislation for non-heterosexuals.
