Some people find it runs faster with Javascript disabled. Maybe that will help.

Yeah IE is really sh*t for boards on a Mac. The ie in boards.ie certainly doesn't stand for Internet Explorer.

Have a play with other browsers. Try iCab too.

Prior to Panther and Safari 1.2 Boards was a pain to use, the menues were muxed ip and the pages took an age to refresh.

If you are using Jaguar I suggest you try Panther and the latest version of the JAVA update - 1.42 i think. Also get the small but perfectly formed Safari 1.2 browser - et voila, Boards.ie charging through those cathodes quicker than von Neumann could say stored-program !!!!

    Er . . works fer me !:D

    Silly questions:

Have you got the latest 1.2 version of Safari?
Have you installed 1.42 Java update?
Have you enabled java in Safari ?
Are you browsing without cookies, if so turn them back on?
Is boards slow in all browsers or just certain ones?

My setup includes all the above and Boards, which used to be very painful, is now as quick if not quicker in some cases than IE on XP.

the point here is that it is more or less a server problem with the mac IE browser

this is the only site where i have problems with
there are alternative but then again there are alternative websites
might do a bit of updating though but its not my main computer so it doesnt really bother me as much as it would if a MAC was my main home Computer

IE and Safari slow slow slow - some reason mozilla is fine, so i guess its not a java problem.

All the latest updates, java / 10.3.3, IE still a joke on "boards" (20+ secs to open pages) Safari - prob with virtually all sites -dead dead dead slow.

Mozilla firebird - fast as IE 5.2 in 9.2, go figure :-S

guess what i'll keep using - should mention that I'm on an old mac (333mhz) and maybe CPU and IE/Safari is the issue (I have plenty of ram).

    methinks free'r is better :P

An odd set of circumstances must have lead to me being the only one to have a zippy browser on the MAC. Perhaps theres a conspiracy afoot !

Seriously though guys I kid you not I use a 1.2GHz G4 Powermac and IOL BB and ever since I updated the system to Panther - Safari 1.2 - Java 1.42, Boards.ie had been working a treat. The menu's at the top of the screen used to be totally screwed up and pageloading took about 15 to 20 seconds after the mouse was clicked. I always put it down to boards' extensive use of java.

Originally I tried Firebird or something and it just kept crashing on my system. I.E. just went against the grain with me as I don't like/trust/need it.

I have a 450MHz Cube here that is still Jaguar/Safari 1/Java 1.4 and its painful to browse boards with it.

Are you guys sure you have ALL the updates ? Panther is an important ingrediant here.

It's not a Safari problem , not is it a IE problem, nor is it a panther or java problem. It's the boards.ie html/php/javascript that is the problem.

The redesign project may alleviate these problems... I suspect it's something to do with the Javascript menus.

It's possible you just have an old Mac... you didn't mention the specs yet.

    Hi,
    Powerbook 12 " 867mhz
Os 10.3.3 with updates upto today
    384 ram
    safari 1.2.1 latest
    Utv/Iol dialup

There is a delay when loading a boards.ie page which last about 5-10 seconds. This happens on every boards.ie page and only boards.ie. :(

to be honest we shouldnt be restricted to having to update ur jave and use a different browsers just to surf boards at a respectibable level
the vast majority of mac users cant use boards, if that was a IE windows problem then there would be war!

The powerbook should not cause the problem you have, its well up to the job, I'm on a G3 iBook at the moment and its doing fine !

I dont think we should blame boards.ie for the problem though, it's obviously a java isue people are having with the mac os. In fairness to Apple they do actually improve things with each update.

Interesting comment about what would happen if Windows users had the same problem, I wonder how many realise that JVM does not come as standard in WinXP ?
