We've got about 7 or 8 tunes we're trying to finish writing. Some have odd timing which doesn't help, we've got one in 9/8 and two in 5/4. It's hard coming up with riffs everybody is happy with ;)

Getting into a few Smashing Pumpkins numbers now that I've got my leccy back

    /hugs leccy

Bullet with Butterfly Wings (with a capo - I hates Bbm!!) and an acoustic-y version of Today.

Got a bit browned off with doing Radiohead and Pink Floyd all the time.

    Dead Embryonic Cells by Sepultura

We're putting the finishing touches to "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" by Paul Simon... (-WHAT- a drum line!)

Also in the process of a cover of "Puttin' On The Ritz" written by Irving Berlin...

And of course, our own stuff... Got a 10/8 part for a tune too, Doc. How's your drummer working out with those 5/4 fills? :)

P.S. Does ANYONE play or know someone who can play trumpet?

    Nice Giblet :)

Speaking of time signatures, another band I'm in which isn't quite so serious is The Free Electric Beer Machine.

At the moment we're writing a tune about the Easter Rising. The tune is in 19/16...

    God, that's ultra muso-nerdiness :/

Are you playing in odd metres on purpose? What's the point, then it sounds forced, listen to some Steve Coleman or a Ben Monder that'll help ya with the natural feel in odd metre.

Just Transcribed a Sach tune 'Flying In a Blue Dream' only to find it already done in the new Guitar Techniques mag, ohh well......oh yeah learning some Bach to, Cello Suites are great.....

Got the video for this the other day. Do you guys do their song "America" by any chance? One of my favourites :)

Well, in the case of the 19/16 song, we're just doing it for fun. The Beer Machine isn't quite what you'd consider a serious band.

But, from a "serious" song-writing point of view, I have written songs that change time signature / have strange metres. The reason being not that I thought it would impress anyone, but rather that I felt it suited the song.

For example, one song we have throws in two bars of 3/4... Now, I didn't realise exactly what these bars were until I was explaining it to someone else, but I felt that just a snippet of the lyrics called for a slightly "French" theme (the chords are a C#m7 -> G#7 -> C#m7, so the cadence coupled with the time signature makes it sound... well, "French", to my ears at least!)...

I hope that doesn't sound pompous, but in sooth it was the exact opposite: I just did what I felt would sound good!

However, you don't need a "point" to play in an odd metre. Some people just like the challenge of it and the fact that it's something different. It's not something I'd personally do, but I can understand that people may want to try something new and interesting to them.

There's plenty of composers from all walks of life. I wouldn't go accusing them of doing anything "bad", just cos it's not 4/4 or 6/8 or whatever. Let people do what they may: If they're happy, they're happy. If they want to make their audience happy and they do, then so be it!

Ok, I'm just back from the pub and it's 01.30, so I apologise in advance in case this sounds a bit like a rant! :)

Emmm my point was.....when you sit down and go o.k I'm gonna write a song in 5/4 generally you're trying to fit something into that time...whereas if you play a song like you said and realise it's in odd time after you play it, it tends to sound more natural...

I have some tunes with 4 bars of 5 1/2/4 lol

    Ahh ok. Understood!

Sorry, I took it up the wrong way: I thought you were accusing people of writing a song against musical convention just for the sake of it!

You're right: There's nothing better then when you write something that you later realise goes against convention, but it sounds natural. Feels like you've stumbled upon a tiny something new! :)

In fact, that's inspired me to go start another post...

No, we're writing riffs, sometimes they're not in 4/4, that's just the way it happens. We're not getting antsy about everything being 4/4 and we're not getting stuck up our own arses etither, or trying to be clever. It's just the way it happens. If it's a good riff we'll work on it, regardless of how simple/complicated it is. Sadly what flows naturally on a guitar doesn't always work out that way on drums.
