audio in problem

    i guess this is the most suitable place.
    I have my minidisc player hooked up to my PC using the audio in plug, but cant hear it for some reason.
    I know there is sound coming through the PC, as cool edit pro picks it up when i record while playing the MD, but I cant hear it (i have to record it and play it back to hear it).
    now, heres the wierd part, when i use my normal pc speakers, I can hear it, but I usually use my stereo (which has a USB PC link) for my PC sound, as they are bigger and better etc etc. This is where the problem occours, now the stereo is working fine, if i play an mp3, I can hear it grand, and only the other day I hooked a keyboard up through the same socket and could hear it through the stereo.
    So why wont this work? I havent been messing with sound settings, so I dont see how this would be an issue.
