If you can use Knoppix, you can use Debian. Why not try a HDD install of knoppix?

laptops usually fall down on their xfree (soon to be xorg) configuation.

It's quite likely that is what is happennig to you as knoppix has the best autodetection going.

My advice would be to load the text installer of whatever linux dist you want and after installation etc. boot knoppix and simply copy over the
/etc/X11/XF86Config (or XF86Config-4) to your hd installed linux!

please post laptop specs and details of point of failure!

mandrake move said that the monitor wasnt supported
mdk 10 and fedora just froze during installation (i think, its a while since i tried it)
how would i copy xfree over?
should i maybe wait for fedora core 2. any idea when itll be released?

    my spec is:
    amd mobile 2500
    512mb ram
    60gb hd
ati mobility 9600 with Omega 2.5.04 driver
    via motherboard(not sure which type)

    sorry about the delay replying

    Have you tried Knoppix ?
If it boots then take a note of the driver it used.

can't believe i missed this thread till now, cos i am in a similar situation to red vex.(except a newbie) I've the 2800 version of this laptop and couldn't get mandrake move going on it. As he said, Knoppix runs fine but there are fatal errors with Mandrake.

(it's academic to me at the moment anyway, had to send my laptop back to germany for fixing, a weird display problem)

I see that bazh suggested using a debian distro because Knoppix is debian but i was just wondering which would be the most up to date distro, cos i can imagine haveing horrific driver problems with the laptop.
