Discovery Channel on NLT Analogue Service in Dublin

Anyone know why the Discovery Channel picture on the NTL Analogue Service is Dublin is soo poor at the moment. I'm getting very bad lines through the picture. Other channels are unaffected which makes me thing this is a network rather than an individual connection problem. Would appreciate any light anyone can shed on this.

No problems with it here (D24).

No probs here either (D6W). Chances are

    1) NTL have jacked up your distribution amplifier, causing your TV to be "Bombarded" with signal (this is quite common in areas where digital tv is used, but the area is not upgraded to digital).

    2) Someones hacked the network, and tapped off their own connection to bootleg cable from ntl. Apart from being a nuisance, it's very illegal.

And it's most likely the 2nd one.

My advice is to give ntl a buzz. They don't jack up amps for no reason. If they did put the amp too high, they'll turn it down. But if it's someone bootlegging cable, they'll come out and do lines testing and cart that person off to jail.

Its also worth noting if the problem occurs when you have a VCR, PlayStation, Satellite system or likewise operating - it's possible that that device is occupying that frequency or a frequency close to that.

Thanks for the suggestions folks .. much appreciated. Will give NTL a buzz later and see what they have to say. Read you thread cableguy about the Band I channels E4, Discovery & C4 being duplicated on UHF. Waiting for the signal to be strong enough and I'll switch the TV over to the new locations.

sorry to shoot down your theories PK, but it's nothing so exiting I'm afraid.

it's something to do with background interference when transmitting on the lower frequencies that causes a lot of people (including me) to get poor signals on those channels.

most of the other channels are tranmitted above 175mhz, except those 3 (Discovery = 48mhz, Ch 4= 56mhz and E4 is at 64mhz).

didn't know about the UHF signals, so I'll look out for those. anyone know the freq. of them?

Picked up the E4 signal tonight but only picking up RTE1 and Net2 near those other frequencies

Anyone know why they are repeating putting a signal for a channel ,Sky News, near an off air RTE signal again

(Sigh) More fiddling required. This is really going to cause me probs as I have both cable VHF and terestrial UHF mixed and cabled around the house.

Discovery, C4 and E4 are terrible for me on NTL. I have call ed them out a few times and they have never been able to track down the problem. Other people nearby also have the same problem. Eventually NTL eng said there is too much electricity coming in to the area and therefore it's ESBs fault!!! what the F*CK???

Ditto, it's far less obvious when I use the main NTL cable only on one set, but as I've split it to most rooms the signal degrades.

Anyone know if those signal boosters would work or are they just for aerials?

    It is what it's.

C4 reception has been crap for the last 3 months I mean you can see nothing at all I phoned ntl many times they still have done nothing to fix it.So this week I phoned them again I spoke to sales section and told them to disconnect me I had had enough now here's the thing I pay the cable bill but my wife's name is on the bill so ntl told me I could not have the service (that's a laugh) disconnected my wife would have to do it.
    p****d off with ntl

A good quality variable gain amplifier and splitters will improve the quality greatly. Replacing the cable could also be a help.

    Sky News????

It actually happened a few years ago and SKY News wasn't on the that frequency at the time as far as I recall

I had a mix of aerial ,to get RTE1 even when there was a cable breakdown, and cablelink feed into the one tv socket

Cablelink was expanding their range of channels at the time and for some reason decided to put one of the "new" channels on a frequency right beside RTE off the aerial.

As a consquence I had to disconnect the aerial to get the "new" station without interference

They seem to be repeating that using CH30 and CH34
