OK, I don't think this is something out of the bounds of what is acceptable for discussion, but if anyone thinks differently, I'll be happy to delete this post.

right, all I want to do is transfer some video (mostly TV shows I've recorded through my TV card and stuff from camcorder) to DVD+/-R/RW, but I've been having trouble finding something to do this easily.

does anyone know of anything that will allow me to do this simply? basically take an AVI and convert it to DVD Video format and then burn it to a blank DVD.

again, i'll point out this is stuff I have recorded from TV or camcorder myself that I'd just like to watch somewhere more comfortable than just on my PC. it'd also be nice to be able to send home movies to relatives too (cheap xmas prezzies!).

as a quick fix, I've got the PS2 DivX player and I've burnt stuff onto DVD and watched it that way on my PS2 but it's not ideal by any means.

thanks in advance for any help.

Neo Dvd Works rather nicely and is really easy to use

Will back up ASOK there. Neo DVD is the Ap that came free with my DVD burner so I automatically thought that it was going to be pants. How wrong was I its a simple little prog.

Basic point and click. DVD menus et al

While ease of use is to be admired, is the qualirt up to scratch?

Most bundled programs (not all) have inferior encoding engines, which are designed for speed not quality. Therefore, wouldn't it be worth the extra encoding time in TMPGEnc to get a better resultant file in the end.

I havnt had any bad files. The quality on the disk is the same as playing from raw avi format from my experience. Ive encoded a file using Neo DVD and using Tmpegenc and there is little if any difference

thanks for all the advice, it's appreciated.

funnily enough, I stumbled across Tmpgenc while looking for simple tools. I already had it, but the first time I used it I kept getting errors so I gave up. it turns out it was a problem with errors in the audio stream of the AVI which VirtualDub picked up automatically and fixed with just a direct stream copy.

the upshod of it is that I have now just put together MPEG's from my video files which are ready to be VOB's/IFO's to build my first DVD using Tmpgenc DVD Author. I haven't burned it yet (going to do that in just a minute, after I get the Menu's etc. sorted.

I did a test disc of a 20 minute video which came out fine, so I know it's going to work when I do do it. two little apps well worth paying for anyway, now that I know they both work.

thanks again, I now have everything I need to do everything with my DVD's I want to be able to do. I can make backup DivX's out of my favourite DVD's with DVDx, and even copies of them with DVD Shrink thanks to my burner, and now with Tmpgenc I can do the conversion the other way.

I need to get some DVD RW's so I can put my TV stuff onto DVD and then wipe them when I've watched them and I'm all set.

although come to think of it, something that would let me burn TV onto DVD on the fly would be handy if anyone knows of something that would do that it certainly would save some time and effort.

    thanks again.

you should just invest in the whole nero ultra edition 6 package. it's got about anything you could ever want with regards burning. excellent quality and easy to use. lots of warez and cracks around for it but i'm not going to tell you where cause warez makes baby jesus cry:D

What plugin do you need to do this?

I have nero6 but am unsure how / what to download to get it to encode avi's , mpeg's etc to a DVD format.......

i tried nero 6 ultra in my quest to find something to do the job properly and found it to be very slow with poor results. lots of audio drift which made the whol thing pointless.

now with DVD Decrypter for ripping, DVDx for VOB/IFO to DivX's, TmpGenc for MPEG'ing my existing AVI's and TV captures, and TmpGenc DVD Author for the conversion back to DVD Video I'm all set.

oh, and The FlyDS and PicVideo MJPEG codec for TV Capturing, and VirtualDub and The DivX 5.1.1. codec for encoding captures. not forgetting LAME of course.

Anyway, I have everything I need, without anything being too complicated. aside from occasionally having to use AVI Info to correct audio sync problems which only take s asecond or two anyway.

Yeah I use pretty much the same programs myself, i've found nero to be pretty dreadful for converting to/burning dvd's, though it's been said this depends on the dvd player, mine has a very poor success rate with nero burnt discs, i've found dvdNow by stomp to be more reliable for actual burning.

i think it was the nero recode plug in i got. works a treat for me. it's the main upgrade they have on the site, its about 16 mbs and its free once you have nero 6 installed

it also has a built in resizer (like dvdshrinker) that can compress 9gb dvds to 4.7gb. this, coupled with anydvd's protection stopper thingy means you can back-up any dvd in your collection with virtually no noticable loss of quality in sound or audio

Going to try to download the extra's now, thanks again ;)
