If there's a box left there and a dish already on the wall, this is pretty easy. Phone Sky and ask for a "second-hand contract". You'll still have a minimum 12-month contract as far as I know but given that you won't be availing of the subsidised box and install offer you won't need to connect up a phone line.

As for how they got away with it, they may have installed before Sky started enforcing the phone line in Ireland (which is about 20 months ago if I remember rightly). Or else they took a chance and got away with it. Probably the former though.

If you don't get a subsidy they can't make you have a phone line. An install could cost up to €350 though.

Minimum period is 12 months for new subscribers, 1 month for existing cancelled subscribers.

If you already have a dish & box, then no problem. S/H contract etc as sceptre says.

I think some folks don't realise:
    1) They own all the gear from Day1 (It isn't Wireless Cable TV). Even if you stop paying after 1 month, they want the money, not the equipment.
    2) DIY moving is easy
    3) Even Sky only charge a modest sum for re-install, usually fitting a new dish and LNB!

Only new subsidised Installs with Sky supplied "free" equipment are obliged to have a phone connection.

Should be OK to get it if the box is already there.Phoneline stipulation only applies to new installations, where you are availing of the Free Digibox offer.

Just ring Sky and arrange for a card and direct debit set up.

Do Sky ever check if its plugged into the phone line?

I left mine in for about a week, but it affected the reception on my phone, so I plugged it out, and its been plugged out ever since with the exception of the 2 or 3 times I ordered a box office event. I never had any problems.

Connecting a few times a month will keep them happy. Probabily.
