I was referring to Ritek G04 discs and having put a few seconds of calculator time into it I drop my figure to 70c a disc excl postage.

DVD-R and DVD+R are very similar but DVD+R has a few technological advantages. DVD+R media stores the addressing and speed information required for recoeding in a superior fashion. DVD-R media requires that space be wasted for boundary zones (DVD Player compliance) when doing multi session discs. DVD+R discs also have superior linking of data blocks when writing stops and resumes. Ultimately, compliance with devices that you will be using the DVD's in will be your deciding factor anyway.

No, it all depends what you compare. £11 in a high street shop doesn't seem too bad. You can pick it up and don't have to wait for it and you don't pay shipping. If there is something wrong, it might be easier to bring it back

The link I posted is to svp, with arguably the best priced media in Europe. They do charge a fortune for shipping though so it's only worth your while to order a few hundred at a time or share your purchase with m8s,etc

I've some friends who have made their own DVDs, but had trouble playing them in some players, like Sony's. Does the format or even the brand of disc make any difference in these situations?

    Yes and yes.

    Some useful info here

There are plenty of websites out there with additional info on particular media that are suitable for both writers and consumer players. A quick google should sort your mates out.
