Sound Problem!

I have a toshiba satellite a20-s103 laptop, when i got it the laptop was running soundmax integrated sound drivers, everything was grand for the first 4 months until suddenly the volume halved.

I checked all the setting and they seemed grand, so i reinstalled the drivers which seemed to fix the problem for a few weeks until it went again. This time i uninstalled the soundmax drivers and only used the default ali audio accelerator driver(which worked).

But now the sound is nearly totally gone , i need an amp to boost the volume enough so that it is audible!!

the laptop is a p4 2.8ghz, 256ddr, xp pro machine!!!

Is it a software or hardware problem?

    can anyone please help me!

I could be miles off here, but does your laptop have an actual dial for adjusting the volume?

Because if it doesn't (and it you have to use something like a Function Key and 1 or 2 to increase volume) then the system changes you mention might set it back to a low volume setting or something.

Just a suggestion. There's probably a bunch of fellas that will know the REAL answer... :)

No there's no volume dial on the laptop! And all the bios setting's seem fine!!

Well, is there a function button on the laptop? Maybe beside the CTRL, ALT or Windows key?

Normally on laptops without volume dials, you can change the volume by using a function button and another button such as 1 or 2 or F10 or something. This works the same way that pressing s outputs a lower case 's', but holding SHIFT and pressing s outputs an upper case 'S'...

The thing with this method of changing the volume is that there's rarely a way to see the current volume. With a dial, all the way clockwise might be full volume and all the way anti-clockwise might be mute. See what I'm getting at?

The drivers you installed etc. might have reset the speaker volume to something quite low and now you need to turn them up using the function key and whatever other key.

Anyway, that's just a suggestion. Could be 101 other things too! I had a look around for images of that Toshiba Satellite but none gave a close up of the keyboard, I'm afraid...

    Good luck anyway!
