I had an interview there for the Vis Comm degree back in 1995

I was nervous as hell but I thought the guys interviewing me seemed a bit comatose. Seemingly they were all hung-over that day for some reason. Nice one. (didnt get it - went to LIT)

Just relax and don't let it get to you. Theres always next year if you screw up or are just unlucky. You are doing your leaving cert? I see from your profile you are about 18. You have all the time in the world.

Not to be cynical or anything ;) — but you're also likely to find yourself in front of an all-male interview board (even though 90% of the students and 70% of the faculty are female...). Dress up/down accordingly...

There was a notorious old lecher lecturing in the DIT School of Art & Design c1990 (won't name him libel laws being what they are) but I'm sure he's dead/retired/in prison by now

He did tell a girl in my year that he wanted to put her across his knee and "discipline" her. Female students would not get into a lift with him. I could go on.

Anyway Smellygirl don't let that intimidate you. If anyone pulls any of that **** you can sue the arse off them nowadays :)

But seriously any college interviews I've done were fairly brisk and business-like. (I studied in DIT, Athlone IT and Limerick IT so I've done a few)

And you will do better if you can relax. It's impossible to prepare for every possible question you could be asked so why worry?

As far as I remember most of the questions in any interview were about the work in the portfolio, so if you can talk well about your work you will have no problems.

It might be different for the teaching degree though. They might want to know why you are interested in going into teaching but I'm sure you have already given a lot of thought to that so again you should be ok.

um talk about your work, your portfolio and wanna to be a teacher

i may be an idealist but passion speaks volumes

along with a bit of realism and discipline

didn't think you should get into analysing interview technique....

prepeartion is one thing but then really listen to their questions and answer them for waht you think of their not from what you have prepared cos that might be the wrong answer

ah i dunno im rambling now

its very hard to get in touch with people who are in the college now and asks them i tried before

    hey smell.....

theres a girl on my course and she wants to do teaching too...aur art teacher really knows her stuff and she has many a time told this girl to make sure you PRACTICE TALKING ABOUT YOUR PORTFOLIO!.....lol...

you have to know what to say...ie....dont ever say...eh ...yea...this picture here...well...my teacher told me to do that,,,,etc...

Saying things like...well...using this texture here and here emphasises the feeling towards my subject matter.....yada yada yada ...;).....

trust me...so like you know your stuff....and u'll be fine :)....teddi :)

ok the first thing you need to do is take out your portfolio through the application process its easy to get disconnected from the work inside. As your looking through it question it as if it wasnt your portfolio. Take down every question- be as critical as possible but don't forget to write down even the simplest of questions - like why this colour etc. Then write out all your answers. You'll probably cover every angle in these questions, and the fact youve written them out previously means you'll be more coherent in your answers. If its for the teaching course in ncad, try and have an understanding of the career before you go in.

It sounds like a really anal thing to do, but i get nervous as hell - even in simple things like a tutorial. I've found i'm a lot less nervous when i go through this process- and am more confident about my work then and that'll be really important in a interview process. Good luck!

PS its all well and good to say things like this:
Saying things like...well...using this texture here and here emphasises the feeling towards my subject matter.....yada yada yada

But DONT if you dont know what youre talking about- dont make it up it reeks of bull****- they'll dismiss you completely if you sound like youre making it up....but if you understand your own work then there's no probs with it! (except for the yada yada bit!)
