Are my cd/dvd drives dying?

My computer has stopped reading a lot of my CD-R's. The question i have is, are the discs broken, or are my cd drives getting dodgy. Even discs burnt less than a month ago are acting up. And previously i have had no problem with discs of the same brand, which are over 1 year old.

My DVD-Rom is about 4 years old, and my CD-RW drive has had a lot of use over the last 2 years. Is it possible one, or both, are dying?

If its a software problem, how do i go around fixing it?

taking the engineer's approach of trying to narrow down the problem:

It is possible that your cds are losing their data. Have you tried reading them in other machines? Are they branded ones?

If they work in other machines I would just spend the 50 euro or so and get a new CDRW drive, life is too short to try to fix that sort of physical problem. Or Maybe borrow a cleaning kit / some compressed air in case the lens is dirty.

If they don't work, then change the type of media you are using.

You can get a pioneer 8X DVDRW for around 100 euro from blankdiscshop.co.uk now, they have a good reputation for reading all sorts of media.

    Just a quick update:

My DVD-rom drive is grand... it just has the usual problem of it can't read certain discs (it is quite old...).

But the CD-RW is most definately dodgy. It refuses to recognise any disc whatsoever, and won't recognise blank cd-r's either.

Is there any diagnostic for this sort of thing, or should i just bin it?

    All advice welcome.

Probably just dirt on the lens... rather than any malfunction.. personally I'd take it apart clean it and stick it back in (or just one of those cleaning CDs).. if that doesn't work then a new cd/dvd drive is on the cards (which it should be anyway, as said they're cheap enough).

How would you go about cleaning it manually?
    Tissue or something:dunno:
