Is my Radeon 9800 pro broken?

    Ok.

    Where do I begin? *shudders*

I FINALLY got my radeon 9800 pro from jes the other day and it was perfect the first few days. Even got a good ole score of 5500(or thereabouts) in 3d mark 03 pro.

But when I am playing Battlefield Vietnam and Call Of Duty, it crashes. It totally locks up.

And the whole system stalls on the screen where in Vietnam is when im ALWAYS in the jet. Always crashes then. So strange.

I do not know what to do.

I used my older radeon 9000 pro and it ran the game barely and was ok and didnt crash. But with the 9800 pro, it does.

    My system is p4 2.5ghz,
1 gig of twinmos pc2700 ram,
    radeon 9800 pro
and msi 648 max motherboard(using sis drivers).

    Any ideas?

PS: It doesnt lock up at all when im playing pro evolution soccer 3 on my pc or some other games like unreal tournament 2k4. But it does with Vietnam every time and sometimes COD.

    Any ideas folks?

    Cheers in advance
    :(

i'm no expert but if it always crashes in the same place it sounds like bad drivers or a buggy game. have you tried the latest drivers from the interweb?

    What is the interweb?

I have a feeling for COD, its just bad drivers and for vietnam its a combination. I dont know. Its really bugging me.

Did you have old drivers? Try uninstalling all drivers and then putting the new one back on

Yea its most likely the drivers, there a post about someone on the battlefield board.
the drivers are very new out, so is the game. they have not been properly tested yet, it should be sorted out for you in the next patch of BF:V
Ea/Dice are sorting ATI issues out with ATi etc.
So have you tried older drivers?

Yup and no luck either. Just as long as the 9800 pro is not broken I can live I guess. I just assumed it could be as it gets VERY hot.

As you said you can run other games nor probs,
and it just crasher when you're in the jet so its deffo due to the game and drivers.
Don't worry about it, should be sorted with the new patch in BF:V soon, they made an announcedment that they'll be releasing a new patch in a bit.
Just stay away from the jets ;)

I had similar problems playing COD when I got a Radeon 9600 XT - upgrading the drivers did the trick.

Apparently there's a way to really uninstall ATI old drivers before installing the new catalyst. Try following the steps on this website. Couldnt harm in trying right?

Try setting your BIOS to use AGP4X only.

    Cheers for ideas people.

Stephen, Thats all it can and will use when i install the latest drivers. I hate SIS driver. They do not even install fully. I notice i have to go into device manager to manually load up the .inf file for it to work. And now that I have done that, i can not have fastwrite or agp 8 speed anymore. Am I missing out? :(

What was your old card? Did you fully uninstall the previous drivers and then use either Det Destroyer or Catalyst Remover?
Remnants of old drivers in your registry can cause problems, and both Nvidia and ATI drivers seem to leave traps ;) for opponent's drivers.

I read somewhere recently that Battlefield Vietnam has probs with ATI cards that will need a game patch to fix.

Here's a good guide to known ATI problems and solutions:
