    hi all

I reinstalled XP about a month ago and dl'd all the updates. But since then I've noticed a deterioration in audio performance. Im getting noticable latency and audio stutters.
So seeing as i was off work today i though i'de go at it and try to find the problem.

But i noticed in device manager that under "computer" my pc is described as a multi processor machine, which is not true.
Under "Processor" my 2.6 p4 is listed twice.
And under "IDE Controllers" everything is listed twice aswell (I have two hd's and it is listing 4 controllers.
These are the only catagories that seem to be inaccurate.

Any of you knowledgable guys got any ideas about this?

    Thanks
    Wavey

    I can't imagine this being a problem.

What make is your sound card? Have you tried to upgrade/reinstall the drivers?

If its a P4 with hypethreading, then Windows might see it as 2 logical CPUs.

You're right windows sees a Pentium 4 HT with hyperthreading as 2 cpus.
As for the ide controllers it could be that your motherboard has ide raid on board. Its easy enough to check if you pop the lid. You'll see 2 ide connectors extra. For the sound card I'd advise the standard uninstall reinstall. If its onboard sound just buy an audigy or a terratac card, with a high snr ie. 95 to 105 dB the sound will be better. If its a pci card just throw it into anothe rmachine to check if it follows. If it doesn't then its drivers or settings on you pc. There's not much else i can tell you only the basics.

    Thanks for the replies lads.

The motherboard does have to sata connectors.
Its a 2.6p4 and i dont know if it has hyper threading.

As for the Sound card its a Tascam US428 external usb unit that i use for sequencing.
I've tried all the driver versions but imstill getting the stutter during audio playback. This happens in games,mp3's and when using a sequencer (Cubase).

I've also tried adjusting Buffer size but no joy.

Also i just remembered that i replaced the motherboard when i reinstalled windows. Its an ABIT Is7. A newer version than the one i had in before which was also an aBIt board.

Could this mean that it caound be a usb problem? The board uses usb2 sockets but i only have usb 1 drivers installed as i dont have XP SP1. Is it possible to get usb2 drivers without getting sp1?

    Cheers

You should have the drivers for usb 2 on the mainboard cd. you don't need the service pack for this as far as i know. you should prob make sure the onboard sound is disabled as well, if any....
