I had tickets to the last time they were meant to play here and we were told they would re-sechdule. The show sold out so they know they have the fans hope they get around to it and I think they will cause a lot of bands leave Ireland out of the original tour plans and then arrange something at the last minute.

They're touring America until the 28th of June. I reckon, with a new album, they'll do a UK tour, probably including Ireland. Festivals maybe. Would be just in time for Oxegen. Would be better than the Point...

it would be deadly to have them here for a show. Saw them on the warped tour a couple of years back when i was in toronto, they were class!

who knows, maybe they wouldnt make enough cash out of it. One gig Id definetly miss, full of 13/14 year olds.

I'd happily go if you gave me a free ticket and a crate of rotting fruit/vegetables.

if you know their music youd know its not all the same, youd know if you listened to cheshire cat, dude ranch or the new self titled album.. They have catchy hooks and are a punk band in every sense of the word. people see blink as sell outs and see them to be the same as trash 'bands' like busted, i dont know where people get it from. they made a well known video to make fun of these bands and are now bracketed by sum people as being in that group, i just dont understand it! punk music is not meant to be a complicated form anyway. Im sure your type of music is all well and good r wotever. blink are just class, have been for years, end of story!

Agreed. They were around and making quality music way before any of that manufactured punk was. Just because they've become popular lately, does all of their music suddenly become shit? And I know I said on one of these threads recently that the new album isn't much to be proud of, but I've been listening to it a lot lately, and it is actually very good, though it might be quite different to everything else they've done.

Ok, i'm speaking from the perspective of an ex blink fan. I own two albums before you go on bout not knowing songs and i know songs from some of their other albums too. I don't like em anymore cause i grew up and realised how crap they are.

1st off, they aren't sellouts and i'd never call them that cause they always sounded the way they do. And i don't hate them cause they became popular.

2nd, all their songs do sound the same. The same three chords over and over like green day, cept worst. At least green day were kinda original and wrote some good lyrics.

3rd, singers voice (i know his name is tom delonge), is an annoying nasal sound.

two albums, you dont know much about blink do you! i grew up with blink from way back, i grew up in san diego listening to their music, went to a lot of their early shows,i moved back to ireland with my family a couple of years back. they have nine albums in total, all pretty class apart from a couple songs on flyswatter which was recorded by the band when they were 15 or sumthin and is a little rough. Their self titled album is class, all the songs on it sound different, far from crap! They are no pink floyd i have to say, they are a punk rock band! but hey, who wants to be like pink floyd anyway! And as for tom, the hardest workin man in showbiz..he rules!

Give yer 8 euro to charity instead. Or treat yourself to a pizza. Or buy an extra-bumper pack of toilet rolls. Or 2 cans of deodorant. Or shoe polish. Or a book about real music. Or a cheap mouse. Paper for your PC printer. Cheap aftershave. A few blank CD-Rs. Even a blank audio-tape to show to your children's children. Buy a pillow case. Or some chocolate biscuits for your mother. Buy a plant for the back garden. Back Arsenal to win the League next season in a betting shop. Get one of those green tree smelly things for your car. Send money to the Children in need telethon. But for Jesus sake, don't spend 8 euro to see Blink.

The notion that bands like Blink182, Busted and AFI can be considered "Punk" never ceases to amaze me.

    ----
    punk1 ( P )
    n.

    1. Slang.
    1. A young person, especially a member of a rebellious counterculture group.

What exactly are Blink182 rebelling against, trouser width? Low quality skateboards? I would consider Stiff Little Fingers, Undertones, Pistols and Clash. Blink182 are closer to pop than punk.

As for your musical tastes, this is the rock/metal/punk board, you can express your love for Blink182, and I can quietly (or sometimes not-so-quietly) disagree.

ahh, what u talkin about, blink182 are nothing like busted! busted are manufactured, a pop band trying to act like a so cal punk band, when clearly they are a boy band! i dont think you understand the real point of punk. its a fact blink are successful, they shouldnt be looked down upon for that. They are punk, being popular is just a bonus. they deserve success because mark and tom have worked their asses off from the time they started the band and havent let it get to them. people who say they sold out annoy me, they played a tour recently in the states called the dolla bill tour and let fans buy tickets for the shows for a said dollar,u can joke how they must be desperate for fans but id like to hear if other bands would do that for their fans?? doubt youd find many, if any.

Oh, I'm going to put that in my sig at some point, because I find that hilarious.

No. Blink 182 are not punk. I defined punk above, and you still can't see that they're not punk. There's a genre called Pop-Punk that covers them in All Music Guide, but I wouldn't get that deep, I'd just keep them to pop, which by the way, is short for Popular, not an insulting term (Divine Comedy are pop and they're damn good).

Punk implies rebellious, different for the crowd, rebelling, whereas Blink182 are far from different.

That said, I never said they were unsuccesful or that they're success was undeserved, I can appreciate that Dude Ranch was a good album, I just didn't like it. American "wannabe-punk" annoys me (for the most part) and I find each Blink182/AFI/Offspring as annoying as the one before it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 358 ✭✭begbie

I like AFI and i think old offspring albums were good. Anything before "americana".

I agree that blink 182 aren't punk, but that shouldn't be a reason for not liking them. And i know its not your reason! You dislike them for the same reason as me - cause their crap.

Just to get things straight here, it’s still not cool to like Blink-182. The wildly successful scatological punk trio, originally from San Diego, has made a series of Screeching Weasel-via-Green Day records that your little sister probably owns but you can feel confident they contain nothing of merit. The band lacks either Ben Weasel’s wit or Billie Joe’s tunefulness, and their constant reliance on the same basic melodies and subjects (boy meets girl, boy loses girl, both say “****” a lot) have been cleverly disguised by good production and funny videos.

While it's not by any means a good album, Blink-182 it is something of a noble failure, a noticeable turning point for the band. Having exhausted every possible means of masking the their numerous limitations, the Blink-182 members have become active participants in the reconstruction of the band's sound, aided by surprising guests like Roger Manning from Beck’s band, Ken Andrews of Failure, and Robert Smith(!) of the Cure and guided by producer Jerry Finn. Songs like “Violence,” “Easy Target,” and the rather effective single/leadoff track “Feeling This” bury Travis Barker’s drums, Mark Hoppus’s bass, Tom DeLonge’s guitar, and Hoppus’s and DeLonge’s vocals in veritable mountains of flange, echo, and distortion.

Nearly every knob on the mixing board must have been employed to create “I Miss You,” where DeLonge’s chorus vocal whooshes and swishes into Hoppus’s refrain memorably. Too bad the rest of the song is so terrible. No matter how much juice Finn puts into the production, nothing can overcome the fact that Hoppus can only hit about three notes in key and DeLonge can’t hit any. The surprisingly high number of slow tracks minimizes the impact of Travis Barker, the band’s best musician and a punk drummer on the level of the Buzzcocks’ John Maher or the Descendents’ Bill Stevenson.

But as I said, it’s a noble failure. “Down” features a long, almost dub-like instrumental section with some unexpected, subtle polyrhythms from Barker. The backing track to “All of This” gives a rejuvenated Robert Smith a nice platform to be theatrical over, although the late entry of DeLonge’s nasal vocals ruins the mood. It’s surprising that more of the songs don’t follow the formula of “Feeling This,” where DeLonge’s wheedling is actually used to good effect and Hoppus is at his most melodious. Instead there are a number of tunes as unimaginative as their titles: “Go,” “Always,” “I’m Lost Without You.”

Blink are to be credited for their adventurousness in the studio. They are to be chastised, however, for assuming that more active production alone would elevate the album to the landmark level their commentary-included liner notes suggest. Maybe next time they should try letting the drummer write the songs.

Civilian Target what the hell are you smoking? I aint really a fan of Blink not my cup of tea. But sayin they aren't punk is a bit stupid. they started fukin ages ago way before pop punk was a global success and they have released a lot of albums. Instead of being a bog standard punk band like countless others (Rancid) they did something a little different instead of writing angry lyrics about how ****ed the government is, they wrote about ****in a dog in the ass (sheer genius) They are not like the numerous identikit bands because they (and Greenday) came first. Rancid and a lot of those so called "true punk" bands are the most unoriginal bands on the planet because they just copy from all that has come before them without inovating at all. where as Blink are different cause they are takin a lighter view of life and taking the piss out of everyone. Whats so un punk about that?

Civilian Target what the hell are you smoking?

Ask me that again next week :)

You haven't mentioned any true punk band there. The founding fathers of punk were bands like the Pistols, The Ranomes, The Clash and The Undertones. That's punk.

Rancid, Greenday and Blink182 have more in common with a wet sqiub than Punk. Punk is hard-edged, shouted, out of tune and incredibly agressive. Blink 182 are as smooth as bowling alley rubbed down with vaseline in comparison....

Seriously, go home and listen to some Stiff Little Fingers, find out what punk really sound like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

    Ramones, 3 chords.
    Blink 182, 3 chords.

Ramones, not very many serious songs.
Blink 182, not very many serious songs.

Ramones, hardly an angry aggressive voice,
Blink 182, hardly an angry aggressive voice.

If the Ramones were around now, they would be seen the same way Blink 182 are. Just because that was back then and this is now, isn't reason enough.

The Clash's first album, some of the second one and some of Black Market Clash is "hard edged, shouted" but none of it is out of tune. The rest... is very different. Seriously, go home and listen to Sandinista, and listen to what you're calling punk.

    Sex Pistols, fine.
Undertones, I only know one song.

Stiff Little Fingers... First and second albums, yea. After that it gets a bit unpunk in places.

I'm not saying any of these bands aren't punk. The Clash will always be a punk band even though they changed their sound in a big way more than once. But Blink 182 have just as much right to call themselves a punk band.

    I love them all...

Punk isn't about being different. It's about not giving a shít what the next person's definition of "different" is. Not giving a shít if someone tells you that you don't fit into the little punk clique. Not giving a shít if it annoys someone else that you don't give a shít about what they think of you.
It's about being yourself. If that means you're different then congratulations, you're now a fully fledged punk rackist. If it means you blend in and are rejected by the elitest fúckhead "punks", it doesnt matter....because you don't give a shít.

As far as I care, some of you are saying that blink 182 aren't punk because they're not different. Different to what? I think going on with what they do in the face of all these "punks" complaining that blink aren't the same as them, is just as punk as your little cash cow raping stiff little fingers anyday.

Christ, this has gone so off-topic it's unreal!

This is a thread asking if Blink182 is going to play Ireland, and here you are bantering about the definitions of what punk is. I'm not sure whether to lock, or split the thread right now...

I'm gonna leave it as it is and let everyone continue, but let me tell you, this thread is just about to fall into the recycle bin.

So keep it CIVIL, and don't throw around personal insults.

Yeah, we should get the thread back on track. Who cares really what type of music they are. You either like them or you don't. Everyone has their own tastes.

As for them playing ireland, i haven't heard anything. They had to cancel last year cause of tom's back, right?:dunno: :D

Personally, I'm a big fan of Blink and would love to see them in concert some time soon. As for Blink 182, take 'em or leave 'em but wouldn't mind seeing them in concert. I have their live album (Mark Tom and Travis Show - The Enema Strikes Back) and it's pretty good!
