    Hi

Just looking for an external HD cos I'm sick of losing all my files when something goes wrong with Pc (happened twice in 6 months) :(

    Any Ideas???

Just lost a 60gig Western Digital HD cos of errors galore, it was 3 yrs old, is that old???

Looking for one with about 20-60 gig, and reliable.

    Thanks.

u could just backup ur important files to a normal HDD every now and again, and then take that out of ur machine and store somewhere else (in case of fire, flood, act of god)

alternatively take a look at this thread

    Try this one.
I find this bit of kit fantastic.
Its battery powered or mains powered.
You can copy the contents of various types of flash memory (eg digital photos when your on holiday and fill up your SD or compact flash cards p saves you buying new ones) onto it without a pc or laptop in sight. You can also upgrade the hard drive.

    nice and portable too.

The warranties don't cover data loss/recovery, however, just replacement of the drive.

Most hard drives with 8Mb cache have a 3 year warranty. This includes Maxtor.

Maxtor only gives 5 year warranties on it's SCSI product lines.

I'm not 100% sure what the warranty on the Maxtor external drives is but I would reckon it would be lower (probably one or two year manufacturers warranty).

There is also a European Directive requiring a two year warranty on all products sold in the EU but I don't know what the uptake in member states has been like thus far. The problem is that some manufacturer (including Maxtor) are taking the line that the responsibility for the extended warranty requirement is that of the retailer.

to solve the irritating problem of a smallish laptop hard drive I got myself a 200GB one touch maxtor drive. Connects via firewire or USB 2. It's the business :)

Yea, I was thinking about getting one of them last night, push my HD space up to 600 Gb.... I decided not to, I may however get my dad to buy me one for my 21st.

I have two external HD's. One I use as a daily backup and as extra disk space. The other one I just copy all my data to every week or so just as a backup. I used to back everything to cdr and I started using DVDRW's but I found just having two hard disks just so much easier than all that messing. They are so cheap these days.

joseph brand - you overclocking or something? You shouldn't lose data that often.
