Win XP/HD boot problem - ideas?

Just completed my first build yesterday, which seemed to go well. Today, I opened up the case to install a modem, and when I tried to boot up again, process was halted at blue screen with the message: "unmountable boot record".
Same thing starting in safe mode, with RAM changed around/removed, modem removed, changed options in BIOS. So I booted from Win XP home CD and used Repair Console. Tried 'fixboot' command but got message "bootsector corrupt...fixboot is writing a new boot sector...the boot sector cannot be fixed". Tried 'fixmbr" command but got "old master boot record cannot be read". Tried repair install but one minute into install process stops as their is an error on the partition used (partition takes up almost all of my only S-ATA drive!). Any thoughts? What can I do now?

Flatten the drive and start again. :dunno:

Tried "chkdsk /r" without any progess. Then when I gave up and tried the "format" command, it went the blue screen again, this time with a "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA" error message! I think this is usually a RAM problem, but I am really baffled and worried about this, my first build! Thanks for any advice.

Also, would not let me delete the partition on which XP is loaded! This partition takes up 99% of the HD. Trying to figure out what piece of the pie is rotten...HDD, Ram, CPU...?

Ok if you got two ram sticks in remove one as the frequencies could be conflicting.... Secondly Pick up another hard-drive with an os on it preferably 2k or higher. Boot through that and then delete partion on other drive.

Is your hard-drive around 180-200gigs cause I had a problem with my os when I installed my 200 gig. Ended up wit XP pro!!
