DVD Re-Writeables

I have just got my first DVD R/RW +/- a Plextor 708. As this is my first experience with this kind of media(I never did get a cd rewriter) I have a couple of questions. When buying blank media what is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+RW disks. I know this may seem like an obvious question but from a practical point of view what one is best. Can both be used in say cd players and dvd players.

DVD-R is only writable once, usually cheaper than +R media. DVD+RW is rewriteable, may not be readable in all DVD-ROM drives (not 100% sure of this). +RW is normally more expensive than -RW. Both + and - R discs work fine in regular DVD players, though some people have reported more compatibility with +R discs.
Also, the quality of blank DVDs tends to be a lot more variable than that of blank CD's... I guess the technology just has to mature a bit.
Also, no DVD's will work in regular CD players. Your dvd burner will burn regular CD-R's and CD-RW's though. Practically anything will read those.

Meh, i've heard that +R discs are more compatible with consumer DVD players than -R. Who knows :)
