I am buying a DELL in the next few minutes but I'm stuck between getting the Intel Celeron Processor 2.6GHz or paying 160 euro extra for the
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.80GHz. Is it worth an extra 160? and whats the difference?

Actually when I include Vat it costs 200 all together. Is it really worth it for someone who uses the computer for nothing more than the internet and downloads?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,513 ✭✭✭Sleipnir

no. only really for heavy application use (games etc)

Does it mean it will be more likely to have problems (crashes, etc.) and will it not last as long?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

It'll last just as long, won't cause crashes or anything, it just doesn't perform as well as the equivalent P4. If you intend to play any games at all or use any really cpu-heavy applications I really would not recommend a celeron. For the likes of normal Office apps and web browsing it will be fine though.

dude, just get a second hand P3 or something
you shouldn't be spending more than €600 total for you machine if all you do is browse.
Christ, Minit-ITX would be right up your alley.

no you will be more no more likely to have crashes and the chip will last just as long.

one of the main differences between celerons and actual p4's i think is the l2 cache, its about 128kb on a celeron and 512kb on a p4 and the fsb 400mhz on a celeron to 800mhz on the p4. i suppose that if it outputs less heat due to less cache it could even last longer.

Well, the Dell I am buying costs 540 (incl. VAT+Del) in total and a free printer/scanner/copyer combo. At the moment I am using a PIII 1Gz so I assume the Celeron 2.6 will perform better. BTW - How much would it cost to buy 256MB ram to add to the PC?

    Cheers.

why are you upgrading though if you don't need to?

to add 256mb of ram to the dell pc, check there website i won't recommend upgrading it any other way as it will void the warranty.

if you looking for some comptabile ddr ram from komplett or something i'd say you could it for about €50 or so.

The PC is in bits, I'm having loads of problems with it and I'll be happy to see it go.

If you are getting errors and crashing what you could do is just format the harddrive and reinstall windows that came with the computer.

yeah can give it to me if ya want :),

well if ya have the money and you really don't want to game or whatever the celeron should do you fine

I think you should order the parts off www.komplett.ie and build the system yourself. For 600 euro you could built an O.K. system around an athlon xp processor.

Myself i would never touch a celeron with a barge pole - they are awful yokes.

If its possible you could also get a 2.4 ghz pentium 4 from the dell site, as it far outperforms any celeron,[edit haviing glanced through the site, they dont seem to sell the 2.4ghz]

anyways have a look at the following on komplett :

    512mb 333mhz ddr ram
    athlon xp 2500+
nforce 2 based motherboard with onboard gfx / sound
    antec sonata case (@elara.ie)
ide seagate barracuda hdd (whatever size you think you need)
then your monitor / keyboard / mouse - all really a matter of preference. No point on replacing these if you are happy with what you have already. The same applies to your disk drives, no need to replace them unless you want a cd-rw or dvd drive.

As for putting the stuff together - dont worry, a monkey could do it.

(was just looking through the dell website, they charge 100 euro to go from 256 to 512 mb of ddr ram, thats ****in ridiculous, i paid 70 euros per 512mb stick of corsair value a while back)

celeron 2.6ghz is about the same as a p4 1.8ghz, maybe a little worse (a duron 1.6ghz beats it in alot of benchmarks actually).

Its definitely hardware problems. I keep telling people its crashing but its actually restarting, something inside is failing. I know I can get it repaired but I just want to get rid of it TBH.
yeah can give it to me if ya want
I was told I'll get about 150-200 for the parts so thats what I'm doing.

The deals on dell end today and I still havn't made up my mind what to do. I put two 2 euro football bets on and all my teams won yesterday, 3 still have to play and I can win 160 euro. If the dell deal ended tomorrow I would wait to see if I won my bet (which looks likely) and if I did I would get the P4.

Ah feck it, the Celeron will do me for the time being and I'll build a proper one when I get the money.

    Cheers all.

    Not much I'm afraid

The Dell offer is fine if you don't have a computer and need one and only use it for light applications and surfing etc. Like others said, wipe your harddisk and reinstall your operating system. You won't know what hit ya when it's all back up and running

In the end I decided to go with the P4. I could have easily just upgraded the original Dell dimension 2400 to P4 for the extra 200 (which I was planning to do) but I decided to see what price the dimension 4600 would be and it was actually 740 too. So, in the end I actually got a P4 with 512MB Ram and a better system all round for the same price.:)

aye, athlons all the way for budget pcs.
seeing as you already have a monitor & cd drives, you could've gone for a nice chieftec case, 2500+, 512mb pc3200 ram, 120gb hd & a raddy 9600xt for more or less the same price

still though, dells are decent enough machines if you just want a hassle free pc that works straight away

Totally agree, although the Dimension 4600 series does come with an AGP slot unlike the 2400 series

The 9800 pro upgrade is one of the best value upgrades I have seen on Dell

When I ordered the PC they asked me to choose a free gift, I chose the A920 All in One Inkjet Printer but I checked the receipt and they charged me 46.44 (excl. VAT). I'm nearly positive it was free because they never gave me an option of taking a gift or not. The other "free" gifts were an MP3 player or digital camera. Does anyone know why I was charged?

The printer is free alright - has been for several weeks now

Maybe it's just the way Dell priced it internally. Was the bottom line price the same as you expected? If not sure, go back to the website and configure it again to see the price

So I take it you didn't get the 9800 pro?

The price is what I expected but they still shouldn't tell me I'm getting a free gift.

No I stuck with the 4600, I'm going over my budget for that anyway.
