I have an 8X agp port and a powercolor radeon 9800 pro which is 8X agp as far as i know. But in my settings the most i can set it too is 4X. Does anyone know if there are bios setting or ATI settings somewhere I can change?

    Thanks very much.

Well its not hard, just press delete on startup to go into the bios, check the chipset options to see if agp speed is set to 4x, and just up it to 8x. If you motherboard supports it of course.

It should auto detect the fastest speed possible for the card and the agp slot. Are you sure that the motherboard is 8x AGP

Ye i sware on my life it is. Msi 648 Max.

    8 X AGP.

Was the main reason I bought it. :(

I really hope I can sort it soon.

PS: Bios only allows me to select primary graphics adaptor ie AGP or PCI. I selected AGP.

PPS: What is graphics aperture size? Its currently on 64. Can go all the way up to 512. ???

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

Set the aperture as high as possible, dont ask me why i dunno. All I know is have it high as possible:D

Can it be set in the Catalyt Driver's menu. I can change mine in the nvidia drivers. I dont have a Ati yet so i dont know

Mine didn't detect it, but I set it to 8x in the bios, and it worked fine.

    Try installing mobo drivers.
My board can run at 4x but only 2x without the chipset drivers.

I think these are your AGP drivers (Win98,Me,2000,XP)

Keep us upto date on your progress.

    {Edit}
There is a known issue with your board and the Radeon 9700......may apply to the 9800 too?
Fix is to update to the latest BIOS.
    First paragraph here. ;)

I wouldn't bother. 8x has at most a 1fps increase over 4x. But you'll most likely see no difference whatsoever.

    Sorted. Cheers the_edge.

    Thats greatly appreciated.:)

Very true. Most modern video cards will rarely use the full bandwidth of the AGP bus at 4x. (AGP8x is about 2Gb/si think)
Still nice to have the feature enabled though.
    Sorted. Cheers the_edge.

    Thats greatly appreciated.

    Happy days. ;)

AGP aperture size should be set to a quarter or half of the total system ram. So if you have 512ram set it to 256 and if you have a gig set it to 512 for best performance.

Thats grand but whats the AGP aperture size do?

Agp aperture size shares the system memory with the agp graphics card allowing it to process textures and stuff quicker.

hmmm, i thought the aperature size was the amount of memory that was on the card...

The aperature size is the amount of system RAM you will allow the video card to address and use for rendering in addition to whatever memory the vid-card has onboard. With increased ammounts of memory on the graphics boards themselve the AGP aperature isn't used as much. Some say set it to match the vid-cards memory, others say 64MB is sufficient in most cases.
