    Hi

I installed win XP on my newly built machine (first build) it loaded up and I used the computer for 5 hours with great pride. The following day it worked fine and the next day the machine wouldn’t start. I reinstalled XP and everything was ok again. Then the next day it failed to boot again. The error message said

    Unmountable Boot Volume

Put this into google and it said I might have a wrong cable; the computer screen says I should go into safe mode and disable cache or shadowing. As it’s my first time I afraid to do anything without getting a second opinion. Could someone out there help me please? Thanks

When you say "wouldn't start", what exactly do you mean? No power? Wouldnt post? Windows wouldnt start? Did something different happen "the next day", or the same thing again?

"Unmountable Boot Volume" warnings usually mean your boot.ini file has been changed for the worse.

The easiest fix is to boot to the XP CD and then press "R" to go to a DOS promt. I *think* you type "chkdsk /p", wait for it to finish and the type "fixboot". When its all finished just type "Exit" to boot into windows.

If you dont have an XP CD, for some obviously legal reason, you can probably download one from the internet, since you obviously own your copy of XP...

Sorry for the delay, ya sorted; I had the CD drive connected with a 40-wire cable and the HDD with an 80-wire cable, both masters. So I put the two on the 80-wire cable HDD as master an CD drive as slave as per google search results, reloaded window, office etc and working fine. Didn’t think it was a disk problem as the codes didn’t agree so took a chance on the cables
