Vodafone refuse to sell me a phone

Went into the vodafone shop on grafton st today and gave my details, bank stuff, ids and all that so I could buy the Motorola v525. This was going to be my first time on a bill pay phone but I was transferring over my RTG number. All forms were filled out, the guy at the counter told me to write down whatever numbers I wanted to put down as my ring friends for free thingy. Then he told me there was problem, and he didn't know what was wrong. he checked that I didn't already have a vodafone account under my name. He said it could be the bank but since I don't have a credit card (no credit rating) then that shouldn't be the problem. The manager at the shop just said to me, "sorry, but we are being restrictive on giving students accounts!"

are they allowed to do that?

but they said that I would have to pay the 100 for the phone, another 100 as a safety net which I would get back after 6 months with them

course they can, they can do what they like, they're selling you something, that doesnt mean they are obliged to, they can choose who they want to give a phone to.

I just lied and told them that I was working, I don't think they check and I was technically working at the time (summer). I thought the standard was though that they asked for the sum of money u front and then they were kosher...

They must have only let me do it since I was working part time for them at the time. Although it was 18 months ago so maybe they hadn't locked down on it.

Students are leeching bastards. I'd bet that loads of them migrated to get a new and cheap phone, used it for a few months, then ditched it without paying some huge bill and bought a new RTG one with lods of credit.

    Damn students.

I don't know what ye're giving out about students for!? Most students have rich daddys and mommys who can pay the bill?!

Most students of Universitys are well off enough to pay for bill phones. And if the student has a current account (eg. Laser account) and a 100% monthly direct debit is agreed on, what's the problem???

It's just Vodafone being a shower of c*@ts. They're evil. Most expensive, and most unhelpful network in Ireland. I'll guarantee you Meteor'd give you a phone. They'll bend over backwards for you. And if you're in Dublin, Galway, Cork or Limerick (or anywhere inbetween) you'll have no problem.

Why not try O2? STAY AWAY FROM VODAFONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

unless you're loaded and can afford to pay ridiculous amounts for your phone!

Most students don't have rich mammys and daddys who'll pay their bills. I'll think you'll find that most students buy their own call credit, and of the rest, most parents would prefer to give the kid the credit when they need it rather than pay an extortionate bill at the end of the month.

I think you'll find that Meteor's interconnect with the other two operators is relatively poor, and most people like to travel around the country keeping coverage.
As for pricing, well Vodafone and O2 are pretty much indentical. Meteor are better but have crap coverage.

How do you know Meteor and O2 will give phones to students? Have you tried?

maybe try O2 or Meteor instead - if you have no joy with them then start looking into what options they might allow (i.e. having a someone go guarantor etc...) - if it was that type of Moto handset you were after I don't see the V600 listed on the O2 or Meteor site at the moment...
