    Hi There,

Was wondering does anyone have a HP laptop? a friend gave me one and I have never used them before........ok no power supply/cable with it so plugged it in using my IBM Thinkpad power supply but doesnt seem to want to charge?? Is this possible??

Also when I turned it on the laptop gets as far as the bios screen and shuts down......would this be the battery life??? With my TP if battery is dead it wont turn on at all......anyone got any ideas????

Do you know for a fact if the laptop is working?, i would say that if its missing its powersupply its probably fecked.

Check the case of the laptop, it should say somewhere what the voltage its needs is. If you cant find one thats within 1 volt of that rated voltage then go to ebay and look for universal laptop charger.

Some power supplies dont produce enough power to simultaenously charge and power laptops, and some will never be able to charge the laptops battery, but can power the laptop - so pull out the battery and try booting it.

Havent a clue if it is working.....thats the prob!! if I knew it was working would just buy a power supply but no point if it is f**ked......will try with the power cable just plugged in and the battery removed........hate HP product but when it is for free I couldnt say no

Do you know what model it is? My Omnibook acts funny sometimes if the battery gets too low. It will start to spin up, then just stop. The LEDs seem to indicate that it is turned on but it ain't. Changing the battery ALWAYS fixes this behaviour but I'm guessing if you don't have the PSU you probably don't have a spare battery either.

FYI the PSU for my Omnibook XE3 outputs 19 VDC and 3.16A.

    Hi Milltown

That sound like the problem,...just starts up...lights flash and disk start....then bang she is off.......when I connect the IBM TP power supply into it I sometimes get to see the bios screen for about 1-2 secs and then off she goes

Output on TP power supply is 16V 4.5A.....havent got HP laptop here so cant check model but where about is it located on it???

Should be a sticker on the base of it with a bar code and a number like F3969JT which is the exact model number, google should give you details of spec, regionalisation etc. Mine also has a sticker with HP Omnibook XE3 along with power requirements and type approvals, TUV etc.

If the battery part number is F2024A and you are around Lucan/Leixlip I could meet you and let you try a good battery in it to see if it's worth buying a battery or power supply for it. They do tend to be very expensive, possibly to discourage the market in stolen laptops. If you don't have the psu and the stickers are missing off the bottom there's a good chance that's what you have.

16V is outside the tolerance, my omnibook was not happy even with an 18V supply. It really needs the correct voltage. You need to try a 19V, 3.16A adapter on the machine to see if it works ok. If it does, you should be able to pick up the adapter for about 50 euro.

Yup, the manufacturers tend to have slightly different power requirements. Hopefully it works for you with the correct power supply.

    Hi

Finally got PS off blokes parents and powered up laptop! he has bios password on it and they dont know it and we cant get in contact with him.....anyone have any idea where bios is to drain the battery?

Unfortunately it isn't that easy. I managed to forget the bios setup password for my hp laptop before, I could still use the machine, but wanted to change some bios settings. Had to ring hp support, they will guide you through resetting the password. First thing they do is email/fax you a form, which you need to fill out, with proof of ownership of the laptop.
Get your mates parents to dig out any possible record of the purchase of the machine, otherwise you will be out of luck.
