got a clevo notebook, p4 2.4 ghz, 512 megs ram.

its pretty good and fast, but the slimtype combo drive is shyte

    or rather was shyte!

when i had the laptop a few weeks i noticed it had problems reading cdr's. then i flashed the bios, loads of times it seems, ........the cdr problem never went away, and then it wouldnt read dvds.............and then it wouldnt read anything!

so i took it out of the bay and ripped it up , seeing if i could adjust the lazer pot or something, now i cant put it back together as some cogs fell off near the eject mechanism and its a load of shyte i think.

thing about it is that 'new' laptop dvd burner drives cost a mild fortune........
i cant be bothered to take around a external usb2 drive.

    any opinions?

My laptop's DVD/CD-RW combo drive is a bit dodgy, in that it will read CD's fine, but it won't play DVD's properly unless its plugged into the mains. And it doesn't like CD-RWs at all. Methinks its a bit shagged.

oh man thats funny... what possessed you to take it apart?

unless you know exactly what you're doing don't mess with expensive stuff.

    mmmmmm

i got a bit of a volatile temper.

when it wouldnt even read cd's i opened the tray and when it popped out, i tugged it and the whole unit came off......

    whoops!

the laptop is worth about 2grand mind you!

IMO laptop drives are mostly crap cos there is way less power driving the lazer than with conventional desktops? is this correct.

thats why it wont read dodgey cdrs etc.

    mmmmmmmmm

still not happy with a gaping hole on the side of mine

    boooooooooooooo

I wouldnt have thought it was the laser strength - Im sure the motor prolly consumes more power than the laser. My bet would be because all the mechisms are a bit more exposed to dust and crap than in a 5.25 inch CD drive.

Have any of ya tried on of them Cd lens cleaning disks?
