thinking of getting the 6600 from meteor on pay as you go... just want to ask a few questions for people who have this phone.

    1. is there a cover for the camera lens to avoid it being scratched while in the pocket?
    2. can you make your own ringtones from the pc like say mp3's files and use them as ringtones?
    3. can the same be done for message tone?
    4. does it come with a MMC? if so what size?
    5. how big of a MMC card can it take?
    6. what type is the MMC does it take? (compact flash etc.)

    thanks in advance.

I got one a few weeks back

    1) No cover.
    2) Not sure, haven't tried, dont think fone can play mp3's
    3) See above
    4) I got a 32mb card
    5) not sure, I've bought a 256 card, arriving next tuesday, will know if it can handle that, can't see why not
    6) It's MMC card.

    just one more question

    1. where you buy yours and how much was it?

(okay so that was two questions :))

I don't have one but it uses Symbian series 60 software so there should be plenty of apps for MP3 playback available. WRT ringtones and message tones being MP3, the N-gage does it and it's series 60 too so I can't imagine why a seemingly higher spec phone wouldn't allow you do this.

All the info you will ever need is here.

    Hi,

As the owner of a Nokia 6600, I just thought I'd add to what's been said ...

    - Ringtones, etc
The Nokia 6600 allows you to change the ringtone used in an incoming call, message alert and chat alert *per* profile.

In the Contacts (ie. phonebook) you can have a ringtone per person if you like :)

Tones can me monophonic, polyphonic (ie. midi files), AMR, AMB (or AMR Wide Band - just a slight better quality version of AMR - but still crap overall - telephone quality) and WAVE files (no MP3).

My advice, if you get the phone, is to use WAVE files *but* convert them to 16khz 16bit mono as that's the best the speaker can do. Even with headphones or a hands free kit, the phone can only ever output mono - so stereo music is a waste of time, 16khz is also the best it will do - you'll never get crystal clear music from the phone - it's simply not designed to do that, and Nokia made sure of that :-/

    - MMC
Currently the 6600 will take the newest 512MB and 1GB cards. Nokia do offically say "only upto 128mb" but that's to cover themselves really. If you are going to buy a MMC card, search the web for reviews or real people who have used the cards to see if they work. What's important is the make.

Komplett sell a 256MB MMC card made by TwinMOS who are a reliable brand. Again, search around and you should find other message boards with reports from people telling which MMC cards work and which don't.

    - Camera and Screen
The camera is quite good, especially when compared to other Nokia phones. You need a lot of light, though. It's quite poor in low light conditions. That said, it's a phone and I'm happy with it. The lens itself doesn't stick out so it's not too likely that you'll scratch it if it's in your pocket. What you'll want to worry about is the screen - it's really big and really easy to scratch. My advice - get a carry case, quick. The official Nokia ones are the best, in my opinion :)

Thanks for pointing out that issue with the 3650. What's odd is that TwinMOS claim full compatibility. Might it be a firmware issue or a freak problem with some 3650s ?!

Anyway, according to many users on My Series 60 the 256MB TwinMOS card does work in 6600 - which is good as I was just about to order one ;)

The problem is that all "Official Nokia" stores are now O2 stores and as they haven't released the phone on their network, there are no accessories available yet. That said, Meteor stores might have them. The next place to try would be the Carphone Warehouse. I think I'll try their Grafton St. store later today...

I got a 256MB generic (veritech brand) MMC from shop4memory.com that works fine, it's a little slow, but hey, it works

check the forums on http://www.allaboutsymbian.com for more info/reviews on the cards.

I recently got an MP3 app called UltraMP3! on mine. Haven't tested it thoroughly yet though.

The phone does play MP3 but it will only output in mono!
