Question about summer work wages

    Just a quick question,

    My little bro (19 years old) is working in a warehouse for 3 months of summer, as he did last year in my Job,

    Last year they where only paying him €5/hour. and i have a feeling they will this year aswell.

    I told him it should be atleast €7/hour (Minimum wage) , it they dont pay him the Minimum wage of at least €7/hour what can he do?

    or beaucse it's sumer work they dont have to pay the Minimum wage ?

    he will be working a normal 40 hour week,

    can anyone tell me where he stands on this

    where you based? Because the company are within their rights, min wage only kicks in with experience etc. However I was making 11€ last summer per hour. so If he can shop around do so. Its unreasonable though to be paid less than what a permanent member of staff would when he/she started.

    it's in Dublin,

    He's been working there for over 2 years,

    What he does it, His college is only on 4 days a week so on his day of from college he works in the warehouse. He worked there last summer and last year he worked all his work exp in there

    They want to hire him bac because his knows what his doing and can be trusted, I told him to look else where, but i wanted to find out are they allowed to only pay him €5/hour.

    at 19 he has one years working experience over the age of 18, and while the minimum wage of 7 an hour only applies to those, he should still be getting more than 5e an hour. there's a website you can check out for minimum wages and the requirements to get it, just google it.
    he should probably shop around, he could easily earn more doing a similar job.

    Whatever about the legalities, €5 is quite possibly the worst wage I've heard about for a 19 year old in years. The last time I had an ordinary summer job (in 2000) my pay rate (converted) would have been better that €5 per hour. That was for a company in a rural area (albeit I was experienced in the role).

    €5 per hour in Dublin is abysmal. Your brother should definitely shop around. If anyone I knew over the age of 17 was being offered that I'd say not to take it unless they were desperately stuck for a job.

    Employees who reach 18 have their national minimum wage entitlement phased in. So in the first year after reaching 18 the employee is guaranteed 80% and in the second year, 90%. This also applies to employees who are over 18 and enter employment for the first time.
    So my interpretation here is that even though he hasn't been working there permanently for teh year since he was 18, he isn't entering a first employment, so he's entitled at least to 90% of the minimum wage, or €6.30 per hour.

    Last year, minimum wage was €6.35, and I assume he was 18 then, so he would have been entitled to a minimum of €5.08. So maybe the company were paying him a legal wage. :)

    As uberwolf says, he could easily find another summer job that'll pay more than the minimum wage. Labouring on a building site or warehouse work for a big company are good summer jobs. You get to work outside and get plenty of exercise. They also tend to pay very well.
