I want to backup my pc to an cd-r. But it will not let me as the backup of my pc with just win xp installed is 2gigs. Is this normal? Do I really need a DVD burner to do this?

    Cheers

No a standard ghost image will automatically spread it out over multiple cd's - check your settings

Mind a dvd is an awful lot easier. Can't recall how many times I've had to stick in my image dvd, reboot and wait for 15 minutes to have the perfect installation again

    Tempting. ;)

How much would a dvd recorder set me back for that?

Have seen them as cheap as €69 incl VAT, excl shipping from European on line retailers. Google a bit for it m8 and read some reviews :)

P.S. my first one for my home pc was Irish £660 excluding VAT at the time

Paid for by my employer though - I ain't a fool

i've got a seperate fat32 partition for my images (via partition magic), and back them up to that, rather than sticking it on a CD or DVD, and then restoring only takes a couple of minutes.

Yeah, pity ghost can't write to NTFS partitions. So I use the DVD method.

Well I decided to save my image on a ntfs partition which also happens to be a seperate hard drive altogeather. Do you mean it cant save to ntfs partition on the same hard drive?

Active Disk Image seems able to ghost NTFS. Someone recommened it to me but I havent tried it yet.

Sorry, was thinking of ghost 2001. That can't write to NTFS partitions, only read them.

You frightened me there for a second Stephen ;)

Have been doing interim hard disk backup images for years as well (in between DVD backups) to NTFS partitions with no problems

BTW so far I have found no major improvements of Ghost 2004 over Ghost 2003 if anybody is interested

    Another alternative: Acronis True Image.
It works flawlessly with an external USB HDD. I couldn't get the latest verion of Ghost working with it.

anyone know how you'd go about using ghost on a laptop that doesn't have a floppy drive?

Is the boot disk standard, or is it tailored to the pc, cos if it's standard you could probably run it off a cd right?

You just need a cd burner or a dvd burner - no floppy needed

also your BIOS should allow boot rom cd/dvd as well
