I rang a UK dealer about a sky + box( i have a UK sub on my ageing dbox as I used to live there) I am in Galway area but am using a friends UK address there.

He told me SKY might not marry the my existing card to the SKY+ box or activate the recording features unless it is conected to a phone line (Which it isnt nor cant be).

So is it worth me getting the box or will SKY relent and pair my existing card to the SKY + box and enable the recording features etc??

    Any advice is appreciated

I up graded to Sky + just before Christmas and had no problem having it activated over the phone. I was told it was not a condtion of the Sky + contract. In fact they couldn't have been more helpfull. So I would go a head. If the do ask say you are having a problem with your BT line.

The Sky+ box is subsidsied ( the quad LNB which is included costs up to €90 on its own ) so in effect you are getting the box for €200 and when you consider a normal non subsisided digibox costs approx. €240 to buy outright.

Therefore, Sky insist you keep a sky+ box connected to the phoneline for the first year.

EDIT oh apperantly not, according to the above post, hang on, I will look up the contract and post back!

    Section C- General Sky+ Conditions

    C1 Telephone Line Connection

    (a) You must keep your telephone line (which must be fixed and operational) connected to your Sky+ Set Top Box for at least 12 months from installation (if installed by Sky) and at all times during your minimum period

This would appear to suggest that only if Sky preform the installaition you need the line.

So if you bought the box and got someone to install it would this not be the case?

    I am confused now!!

I have a Plus Box, bought in Britain, sent to Madrid. Got my Dad to ring from home and all activated.

They activated my Sky+ over the phone without any problem last week. However they did insist on the second box being connected to the phone in order to activate the mirror sub.

I have a sky plus box activated on a UK sub-no probs and no phoneline
married existing card to the new box via my uk contact.

OK would the definitive answer on this one be:

Sky do not insist on the phoneline being connected if you are upgrading from an existing subscription to Sky+ unless you are taking the mirror sub offer.

They will only insist on the phoneline on all new installations wheither Sky+ or Normal digibox.

I was in the same situation as GALWAY - (Long time UK sub and aging box).

I bought a Sky+ box from the UK and connected it up myself. I rang Sky and the girl activated the card but would not activate the + features without connection to a phone line. I pleaded, groaned and moaned, mentioning my 6 years subscription history and she still refused! I then asked for a supervisor - two minutes later she came back to me and agreed to activate the + featues.

Conclusion - persist and you will succeed.

    Heh!
also probably the quicker option there would have been, to say you would cancel your subscription unless they switched on the plus features, that usually gets them to do what you want when thay are being silly when you are out of contract.

Unlike the mirror sub, the two connections in a sky plus box are always in the one location obviously and the "fear" that they have that you might be arranging a second cheaper sub for somebody else doesn't apply.

Not a UK box but mine's been running fine for 7/8 months now & was never connected to a phone line. It doesn't look like the ask the box to "call home" too often if at all.
