Splitting Digital NTL

My brother has been pretty ill lately and is moving home so we can keep an eye on him while he gets better. We decided that we should get Sky Sports in for him (and Digital) to give him a wider selection of stuff to watch on the box.

So I called up NTL last night, ordered Digital and the Sports, no problem. Then they asked me was my connection split I said it was, they said they would have to replace the second point (in addition to replacing the original box) and run a new extenstion and charge me rental on the second point.

Now my brother is gonna be in the house while this is all going on, I don't have a problem with paying rental on the second point I just don't want them tearing the place up with him as ill as he is.

My question is, whats involved with the installation, I know they will replace the original box, but can I not just plug a splitter into this new box and then my extenstion cable going into the sitting room into one of the points on it ?

It's quite a painless process really. The engineer will test the signal to check that it is good enough for digital, as digital either works perfectly or not at all, it needs quite a good signal. If the line is split as you said, this may have weakened the signal somewhat so he may need to do something about that. Having said that though, our line is also split, but the signal was good enough for digital so the engineer just left it alone and installed the box. Most of the engineers are pretty sound and turn a blind eye to the second point that you should be paying rental on. Just ply him with tea and biscuits.;) The whole job shouldn't take more than an hour and shouldn't be that disruptive.

Hope your brother gets better soon.

So, as I understand - if you get digital on one point you can keep analogue without doing anything to the other points (ie, avoid the monthly charge for extra points)? Am I right?

    It is what it's.
