Everything at CDWOW.com is cheaper than CDWOW.ie!

    Example 1:

    CDs@ .ie: €13.95
    CDs@ .com: €12.97

    Example 2:

Matrix Revolutions DVD @ .ie: €24.97
Matrix Revolutions DVD @ .com: €21.63

You will be shown these currency conversions, at CDWOW.com before you put in your credit card number when making a purchase.

So avoid CDWOW.ie like the plague! They're trying to take advantage of our Irish rip-off vulnerability...

Delivery is still free worldwide at .com and everything is despatched from the same place (i.e. Hong Kong).

So they're not as sweet & innocent as they've had us all believe!

    Jamie

    Um, go you?

:p It's known about, not by all however. It's always been that way too :( But I do agree. Greedy bastards

    It is what it's.

well, i wouldn't say they're ripping us off. they're far cheaper than the high street as it is. It's probably just a way of making sure they don't get raped by the volatility of the euro/pound conversion.

They're not ripping anyone off. Ever hear of tax? The rate of tax on CD's differs between countries, hence the different prices on cd-wow's many different sites.

Exchange rate fluctuates. They are just making sure they dont lose out.

The CDs are despatched and delivered from the exact same place whether you buy them from CDWOW.ie or CDWOW.com, and worldwide delivery is free from both sites too.

So EVERYTHING is the exact same.

The only difference is the .ie and the .com.

Ok - consider the difference in price between DVDs. Take the Matrix Revolutions for example. There is over €3 in the difference. If 500 people order this DVD from CDWOW..ie, that's an extra €1,500 we have happily paid them because we typed in .ie instead of .com.

Now that is what I call a total rip-off.

Welcome to boards Jamie. This isn't news to many on here, most of us are aware of the differences in the pricing. The Hong Kong site used to be the site of choice for most (www.cd-wow.com.hk) because the exchange rate was so good at the time. They've increased those prices a lot recently, not quite as good a deal.

FYI, I bought the Spirited Away (region 2) DVD off the .com site last week. Quoted at £13.99, I got it for €20.15 when I selected € as the currency for the transaction. The current rate of exchange is £13.99=€21. So they're ripping themselves off at the same time...(.ie price is €22.95, either way you're saving a few quid)

Also, the 3rd series of the West Wing is available from the US site (cdwow.net, then select the US instead of Germany) for $69.95 (just over €58 according to my CC company)

    Irish price = €68.95
    UK price = £44.99 or €64.83 if paying € (xe.com £44.99 = €67.57)

Today's lesson is...shop around, even within the one company!!!

cd-wow do not pay or charge vat on any transactions.

    €13.95 for a CD?!?
Jesus, those thieving bastards. I'm going to go and do all my music shopping in HMV and Golden Discs now in protest of this fallacy.

I am not questioning anybodys bona fides here ...OK

Cd Wow and Play sell gray imports, there is no question that they are genuine product. They tend to be regions 1 2 and 3 and are meant for sale in diferent markets but what the hell. Nobody is committing piracy here.

Very few are region 0, this would normally be music stuff and old pre 1960 movies and cartoons.

If there is any question about the 'genuineness' of the $3 stuff you may find that the Customs appear at your door with Exhibit A in hand. You are liable as I understand it, the burden of proof is substantially on you to prove that you were not colluding in piracy in these cases.

Please confirm if you can that the stuff is the genuine article and not a genuine imitation , the packaging would tell you this. If there is any doubt whatsoever then the site should not be recommended in here IMO .

I went to the website to have a look and see what the story is. In the forums section I found this topic, where the moderator himself says "Also it is not wise to go shouting to your NYC lawyer when you were attempting to import questionable goods into your country".

So it would seem that the legality of DVDs is indeed questionable. But I must admit to being somewhat tempted. The owner on the site says in the FAQ that he will attempt to match DVD region coding to the purchasers address.

3dollardvd ship copied DVD's without proper cases but include high quality copies of the inserts. Totally illegal. What do you expect for $3 per DVD???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,143 ✭✭✭spongebob

Probably a good idea to truncate this thread, the general policy on Boards is not favourable towards piracy in any form .

    xAmerican History X
A former neo-nazi skinhead (Norton) tries to prevent his younger brother (Furlong) from going down the same wrong path that he did.

And you wondered if the site was dodgy?

You might have good intentions Jamie, but tone it down a little!

Jamie was DEAD right about the risible coverage map. If he bought a phone based on that alone he would have cause to complain quite volubly IMO . My experience of their staff (top to bottom ) has been really good, I find them by far the nicest to deal with and mobile phone customer care is vastly superior to the terrestrial vesion anyway .

Its a pity the post was a bit short on specifics, more of them in between the rants and you'll be fine head :D

Boycotts only work if the people you are boycotting *know* it's being done.

Elsewise you're a statistic on a sales chart!
