Apoligises if this is the wrong forum but I was reading a thread here where a person in donegal was picking up channels via an ordinary aerial.

Does anyone know where I could purchase an aerial (even online) and what type of aerial I would require to pick up utv/ch4. I live in an area where this is possible.
Even with rabbit ears I can kind of pick up utv (the screen looks like a blizzard is going on).

    Thanks for an assistance.

    hello.

Can you be more specific on your location? Do you have an idea as to where you are getting your signal from? (eg, Brougher Mtn, Strabane, Limavady, Derry, or deflector system)

This may help on guessing what type of aerial you need. It may be necessary to add a masthead amplifier and power unit, depending on signals.

    Hi Byte,

I live in North Dublin, Balbriggan area. I am not sure where the signal is coming from but I have attached a picture of the type of aerial that everyone seems to have around here.
I was wondering do you know off any suppliers (even online) as I would like to put it up myself.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

The aerial which you describe is a wideband UHF type, commonly known as a 'Grid', a 'Colour King' or a 'BB Grid' - depending on the manufacturer. The 'BB Grid' made by Triax is probably the most rugged. All of them exhibit a gain of about 10 - 13dBd depending on frequency.

In Balbriggan, these aerials are used to receive signals from Clermont Carn and Kilkeel. Many viewers use masthead amps to boost the weak Kilkeel channels but then experience overloading due to the much stronger channels from Clermont Carn. This in turn causes patterning on some or all channels.

These aerials can be got from most aerial suppliers including Peats in Parnell Street.

    RE the overload problem
Kilkeel uses Channels 39-49 (Group B)
    Claremont uses 52-68 (Group C/D)
It may be possible to get a filter to attenuate the claremont signal

If Claremont is overloading when amplified, I guess you could get a second aerial for Claremont, and combine the 2 aerials with an A/E combiner (Triax make a suitable one "5052").

Have power pass screw inserted on "A" side and put the amplifer after it, so that Kilkeel is being amped but Claremont is just straight signal.

Thanks all for the information. I finally have got the aerial but realise that I reckon I will need a masthead ampliger and a power unit. Can you suggest where I can get this equipment and if it is easy to install. Any guidance regards the steps need to set this up would be helpful as I haven't done this before.
