    Afternoon All,

I've recently acquired an old Beige G3 RevC, and i'm trying to get it online. It's my first mac, running OS9.2, and i dont really know much about the machine...

Now then, i've picked up an old Motorola v90/Kflex 56 modem for use in Windows machines. It's currently sitting in my PCI slot, and the System Profiler sees the PCI device, but it's not offering me any chance to install drivers etc...

    - does anyone know where i could find a mac driver for this modem? do they exist?
    - how should i go about installing same?

    Any replies much appreciated

    Thanks,
    beans

Kflex is a winmodem, if I'm not mistaken, and dont think it will work in a mac and should only work on a PC.

But you could try the solution below

If you go to apple > control panels > modems you "MAY" be able to select it from the dropdown list.

Mac OS already has a ton of modem drivers installed, so you may be in luck.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers for that

    Here's the clincher...
Assuming that i dont have a Modems control panel - for the reason that the file 'Contoller' is not found - then what should be done from here?

I've been advised to restart the mac and activate all the control panel extensions, but have been looking on the net for a fix for Aaaages with no luck

I throw myself upon the mercy of the foodcourt :dunno:

So all the extensions and Cpanels are active ??

If not control panels > extension manager >

Then try "mac os 9.2 ALL" from the dropdown, all the default mac extensions should be enabled.

If still not there, you might try doing a search for modems in sherlock, if you find it in some obscure location then move it to the control panel folder ... system > control panels and see if it works.

If you cant find it at all its possible that it wasnt installed becuase of lack of modem hardware during the orig install ?

Do you have the orig OS disc, if so theres an option to install a fresh system folder and all your original extensions will be moved to system folder (old), you can then drag em across manually.

TBH I think you'll be needing a diff modem for your baby before any of the above will work, you should be able to pick up a 56k external one new for about 30 -40 quid.

AS far as I know theres no PCI modems for any macs. All the internal ones use that Mac slot whats it called the geoport? Best option is buy and external USB one that has Mac specific drivers.

The closest i've come to getting the Motorola to work has been by using the Hayes Internal modem setting in the Modems Controlpanel... but that doesnt quite do the job, so i'm in the process of getting an external serial modem from a friend of mine for cheap

All the extensions and CPs are active now, thanks to the majik of Google-searching

Now it's time to locate some cheap 128K memory boards!

Will tell you what old drives and things work in you G3. Check out the Searchable Databases of Mac Owner Reports. excellent info. Remember lots of PC stuff works in Mac's. SCSI, IDE, Monitors and even RAM will work. You just have to check what other people have got working first. Also PC stuff is a lot cheaper than Mac stuff new and second hand. So if you do your homework, you'll pick up cheap upgrades.

Hook up to the Low End Mac mailing lists. Theres one for older G3's like these. Lots of excellent info on them. But they are almost militant anti PC and pro Mac which is hard to stomach even if you like Mac's.

A PCI modem card is an excellent and cheap upgrade. If you're very lucky you could get your hands on a PCI Voodoo card, flashed or unflashed. Check out This link

I heard you can flash a PC Radeon 7000 card so that it works on the Mac. That would be a better route. Most of these hacks only work with System 9 though. OSX doesn't like most of them.

Gyck - have you a PCI Modem inyour Mac. Because I don't think there are any.

Ooops, I should have said PCI USB card, not PCI modem. Apologies for the confusion...
