Why on earth are the BBC so interested in O'Connell street - have they SEEN it lately????

Good to see "deadly buzz" Brady getting in there. That man is everywhere - you wouldn't think there was an election coming up

Dublin Lord Mayor Royston Brady has called for the open-air gig organised as part of this year's EU enlargement celebrations to he held at an alternative location. The concert was originally due to be held on Dublin's O'Connell Street on May 1st, but Gardai said yesterday that that would require the street to be closed for nine days. The BBC, one of the concert promoters, subsequently pulled out of the event, saying it was not interested unless O'Connell Street was the venue. This prompted the Government to cancel the concert altogether.

seems strange alright. Maybe they're looking for the most recognised street in the capital.

shutting down the main street in dublin was never going to be a viable option, especially since they wanted to shut it down for 5 days. it's bad enough having the roads shut down all over the place for st. paddys day, but o connel's street for 5 days is ridiculous.

never occur to hold it in a park or something- no that'd be too logical huh?

Shouldn't be much of a problem with that. The postal workers won't put up much of a fight. Against union regulations and outside normal work practices.

Or, um, use the designated space for such events - Smithfield.

There is a load of building work going on in Smithfield at the moment and Id say they
would have safety concerns.. also the place looks like a bit of a warzone at the mo..

Wouldnt be the best place for a concert being watched by millions all over europe..

But then again neither is O Connell st...

Talk about cart before the horse. You'd think that before they had all those adds on TV and got people to make thousands of phone calls for tickets that they might have put a little bit more thought into planning where they were holding the gig!! Typical in this country......closing down O'Connell street for a week was never on. Why don't they hold it at the National Stadium in Abbotstown....oh no that might'nt work either
