When I look at my exported AVI's on my computer screen the edges look jpeg'y and dirty. Sort of blurred where I expected crispness. They look a little better when you reduce the viewing size to say 50%. Will this all disappear and look correct when they go onto a DVD and up on a TV screen?

Yeah, they should look fine on a TV screen. Your PC monitor has a much higher resolution. The video you have is made for 720x576.
