Smoking ban to effect live music?

    Check this BBC article

Hard to say. As a non-smoker I always dreaded going to Whelans mainly because of the smoke (and getting cigarrette burns in clothes when it's crowded). I can actually see myself going to more locals gigs as a result of it.

I can't really imagine the sort of reaction a foreign band would give to being told to put out their smokes on stage

Well I'm playing a gig in the UCD student bar tomorrow, which should be packed, I'll see then how it affects live music. Hopefully people don't start heading outside for a smoke all the time.

Yeah, I don't think this is going to have a significant effect at all. People will just have to get used to it.

Smoking at concerts is the reason why I'm glad of this ban. You're standing there and the guy ahead of you is puffing away on a cigarette. Would be grand if it was easier to circumvent the smoke, but at concerts it's just difficult and something you shouldn't have to do. It has really pissed me off a couple of times.

Cigarette burns to forehead were alaways a hazard in the mosh pit, hopefully no more!:D

Zoton: Totally agree with ya there mate, me being small in stature its a serious hazard... I've a nasty scar on the back of my head from one memorable night in Whelans when we went to see Nashville Pussy.... Great gig, bad smell of burning hair/skin tho! :dunno:

Now, generally speaking I thought the ban was a bad omen for the music scene.

Being a smoker ya'll would probably ridicule me for this comment but I have to say I am looking forward to being able to sing in a clear air room (especially in places like Issac Butt's).....

But, on the other hand a few mates went to Brogans last night to a Poetry gig (don't ask, it ain't my cup of tea either!) I'm told there's usually a massive crowd in there, not enough room to swing a cat, and so on... but last night there was 14 people!!!! Yes, 14 people as opposed to the "packed to bursting" 150 to 200 that are usually there on a Thursday night....

I think the real test will be this Friday/Saturday.... there's a few good gigs on between the Village, Whelans and the Ambassador, and it'll be interesting to see what the crowds are really like..... Hopefully not like Brogans!!!!

    *puff......inhale....... ahhhhh, SH!T, WHERE'S THE CROWD GONE!?*
