New Law and Order Series Announced: Trial By Jury

Yippee! We have now got a fourth Law & Order series on the way, debuting - most likely - this Autumn in the U.S. Here's the details from zap2it :
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Put aside all of those jokes about "Law & Order: Elevator Inspectors Unit" and "Law & Order: Parking Violation Squad." The latest spin-off from Dick Wolf's "Law & Order" mothership will be "Law & Order: Trial by Jury."
Speaking to advertisers at an NBC program development panel on Thursday (March 25), the network's President of Creative Development Kevin Reilly calls the latest permutation of the "L&O" brand the "most unique yet."

While the premise for "Trial by Jury" sounds different from anything within the "Law & Order" family, it sounds vaguely similar to Wolf's unscripted summer series "Crime & Punishment." While that show offered a reality take on the trial work of prosecuting attorneys, the new entry in the family will give an omniscient overview of the entire trial process.

The show's format is set up to allow for the possibility of cameos from other actors and characters from within the "Law & Order" universe. Every week will feature the kind of ripped-from-the-headlines stories that that franchise has become know for, beginning with a criminal arraignment and continuing through the trial. The show will provide fictional access to prosecutors, defenders, judicial chambers, the jury room and every other nook and cranny of the process.
It's possible there will be some toe-stepping between "Trial by Jury" and FOX's upcoming drama "The Jury," from Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson. That show doesn't have a place in FOX's schedule yet, but it will look at the jury system from within the pool of 12 citizens doing their civic duty. "The Jury," which stars Shalom Harlow and Billy Burke among others, is likely to premiere before NBC's show can go into production.

Reilly says that while it's possible that "Trial By Jury" could be ready for a fall premiere, the show could also find a home in the post-January midseason period.

As always, Wolf will executive produce the series. Walon Green ("Dragnet," "Law & Order") is attached to write the pilot.
I currently watch all three and am hoping TV3 get this third spin-off due to the way RTE fcuks the original and "Criminal Intent" over for sport.

I think it would have to be a court case over a number of weeks or would it be a court case per eposode?

Law & Order is consistantly good. Great Show.

I got the impression it would be a court case per episode. The difference being that we would see the jury deliberations this time as well as the defence teams, etc. If you look at the others: Law & Order (original) is 50% police investigation, 50% court. SVU is more about 70-80% police investigation, 20-30% court rom base, and CI is almost entirely investigation based, using the attorney for legal advice. It makes sense to have a show that goes back and focuses on the court room, and that allows for cross overs from the other franchises.

The joke was made in the article itself, you're too late :D
Must say I loved "Criminal Intent" this week - insane convoluted plotty goodness. Nothing is ever quite how it first appears in that show. And how can you not enjoy Goren's massive brain at work- he just walked up to the crime sccene, and he had figured out how it went down in about thirty seconds. He's hilariously brainy. And to think I thought that the bad guys might get away with it - noone can outsmart him. Great stuff.

I gather Jerry Orbach will be the lead in this show.

Well what I heard was that he was leaving "Law and Order" and there was a strong possibility he would pop up in "Trial by Jury" in a regularish slot. I didn't hear he had the lead though - why would he switch lead roles from the more established series? Then again the premise of "Trial by Jury" make it sound like there will be less police work involved (probably only appearing in court when he has to testify). More like a "guest starring" spot maybe.
