Modem problem Win98SE

I'm having trouble getting an Intel Ambient 56k modem working on a dell machine running win98se.
The modem installs fine and I can query it in Control Panel -> Modem -> Diagnostics -> More info (relevant
    com port).

However when I go to dial the net it immediately says "You have been disconnected from the computer you are
    dialing".
That's if I use the connection in dial up networking. Internet explorer just says "no dial tone".
An ordinary phone works fine on this line.

I've now tried the modem on my own machine and it works perfectly.
Therefore I assume there is a software problem on the other pc.

My machine is running WinXP which I find handles the installation and uninstallation of modems alot better
than win98se. I have found with this problem in the past I had to format the win98se machine for it to work.

    Is there a quicker way?

Ugh. Give hyperterminal a shot. Select the com port the modem's on. Drop speed to 57600, or lower, and accept the rest of the settings.

On the terminal window, type AT and hit return.

If that doesn't work, either you aren't using the com port, your settings aren't right, or there's a problem with the modem itself (unlikely, since it works in XP).

    If it says OK, try
    ATDT 1891121121

(or whatever your ISPs phone number is), and see if that gets you a connection. If this works, then it's probably dial up networking to blame, try reinstalling it.

I doubt it's TCP/IP, since you say the error happens immediately. But you can't tell with 98, reinstall all the networking components, and the modem driver. Plenty of reboots.

You could look at the modem manafacturer's site for any modem init strings that you can test in hyperterminal, and use in the dial up settings if they work.

To reinstall dial up networking I unticked Communications, applied and rebooted. Then ticked it, applied and rebooted. Is this correct? This made no difference anyway.

I'll try hyperterminal later. Although weather or not it works there will not help .. it looks like i'll be formatting :(

That should be enough to reinstall it IIRC. Win98's a bit of a donkey though when you want it to remove networking components, sometimes it doesn't do it too successfully.

It may be dialling with the old modem.Go to dial up networking ,Left click your dialup(eircom whatever)right click when highlighted, check the drop down menu.Your modem should be here.If not press down and enable it.

This is by memory.ifyou dont understand it i can confirm all later.
Win se i found to be brillant and never had a problem with modems etc.

    I'm probably too late,

Have you tried applying win98's DUN 1.4 update?

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q285189

Debugged a friends win95 pc recently and the DUN update fixed the not-connecting issues, after I had troubleshooted the cord, modem, settings etc.
