Nero problem

I'm trying to burn a 627MB (82mins) AVI file onto a 800MB (90mins) CD using Nero to create a VCD.
I did configure the "expert" features to enable overburn, but the burn process failed.

Any ideas? The file was properly encoded and was VCD compliant, i cant figure out what it is. Any suggestions?

when burning a VCD with nero you should always burn to an image file first (image recorder) as if you burn directly to CD and it f*cks up you lose everything and have to start over. At least if you burn to an image file no matter how big the vcd image is it wont mess up. Then if you have a problem burning with nero you can mount the disc image on your nero image drive. Play it in powerDVD if you want to check the quality first.

If your happy do a 1:1 copy of your imagedrive using clone CD. (CloneCD will let you do a larger overburn than nero)

    Hope this helps;)

firstly, 627 megs should fit on any disc, 72 min, 80min or 90min. If it's failing theres something seriously wrong. Try burning at slower speeds, and do a simulation first.

It worked DirtyHarry! I had to enable the image recorder. Thanks for the tip.

I know, Mutant Fruit, i was thinking that myself - but it's 82mins long? You think it might fit onto a standard CD-R?

Wait, just because the video is 82 minutes long doesn't mean you can't fit it onto a normal "80" minute CD.

I have fit 120 minutes of show on a single "80" minute disc, just by reducing the quality. The "80" minutes only refers to audio, it bears no relation to video.

You stated your filesize was under 650 minutes, so it should easily fit on any disc you buy. If you use nero to burn a VCD or SVCD, you can actually fit 800megabytes of data on a standard 700mb disc, without overburning.

This is possible as a standard data disc has 3 layers of error correction, but a video/music cd (i.e. SVCD/VCD or standard Audio cd) only has 2 layers, therefore you can fit more on.

So unless your filesize was over 800mb, i can't see why nero would crash like that, unless there is something else wrong with your computer.

Cheers Mutant - i'll give it a shot on a 80 min CD, if it works pints are on me!:)

you say you had to reduce the quality - was that noticeable or drastic?

it was very noticeable on high motion scenes, but other wise you couldn't really notice. Basically i reencode DivX's and suchlike to SVCD using Tmpgenc so i can watch em on my standalone.

I generally can get them at resonably good quality, at 800mb a film, then i burn em on cd-rw, watch em, and blank the cd-rw.

It didnt work...i cant even analyze the CD, it just freezes everything and my media player is not responding to it either.
The setting was on "enable overburn" to 90 minutes - you think i overstreched it?

    How annoying...

I agree with Mutant_Fruit about using TMPEncode. It now has a nice wizard for encoding from AVI to mpegs for VCD, SVCD and DVD. It does a much better job than nero.

I don't see why 82 minutes is a problem either but I had lots of problems with nero burning disks that are only 720MB on 800MB CD's. In fact these days I seem to only use nero to make image files and usually burn em with Clone CD or Alcohol.

Nero seems to restrict how much you can burn on a CD depending on the type of CD Burner your using. I had an old 4X HP burner that let me do overburns to beat the band in nero but with my new Sony 52X nero just spits the disks out and asks me to insert a larger disk. even with overburn enabled, DAO and everything else configured correctly. For a while I thought it was my new burner until I tried mounting a nero image on the image drive and used CloneCD to do a 1:1 copy of the image drive. I soon found I could burn a lot more then I ever thought possible.

I think Ahead are worried about allowing too large of an overburn in case too many people fry their burners and you try and sue or something. I'm sure you are aware there is a small risk of damaging some burners when you overburn. But it is very small risk and I’ve never fried a drive yet my 4X HP drive still works but is a bit too slow going by today's standards.

Anyway when you mounted your nero image could you preview the VCD film in PowerDVD?

when you select the overburn option, you have to increase the maximum overfbirn size to a larger value so you can actually overburn. Just set it to 90:00mins or something.

Also, don't late Nero reencode the video when it's already in mpeg format (ie after you put it through TMPGenc). Ignore any non-standard compliant messages if they appear.

    oh man....this is becoming such a pain:mad:

see, i normally burn avi files into a VCD without a problem, because they are mostly VDC compliant, ie Nero burns the damn thing without having to re-encode it (which takes 4 hours..)

This particular 82mins long AVI file isnt VCD compliant, so i had Nero encode it and the burn process failed. I re-encoded it into mpeg with TMPenc - failed again.

Yes i did set the overburn to 90. Maybe i'll just try the Clone CD instead.

Thanks for all the help guys.

how big is the file in MB that you are trying to burn?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

It's 627MB in AVI and about 726MB in MPEG ( i think, i deleted the mpeg in frustration :( )

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

Ok, if its 726 megs, thats welll within spec.

Open nero, select SVCD (or VCD) as the type of disc you're going to burn. do not burn a standard data disc!!!. Once you've opened a new SVCD/VCD compilation, burn a simulation, and then if that succeeds, burn the whole thing.

If it's failing still, it's possible your drive is dying. If nero fails on an overburn, it means you've burned more on the disc than it can physically hold. No program can/will burn more than that.

But, as i said already, you can burn 800megs on a SVCD/VCD compilation.

Yes - i did all that, i've used Nero before. It's just wrecking my head that the overburn wont work.
Now something did get recorded on to the CD, but neither Media Player nor Real Player will respond to it and read it.

This is the standard 700MB CD. The 800MB CD that i burned works perfectly. I think i'll just use the higher capacity CDs, no problems there.
    Thanks

Man Ive been in your shoes had my head wrecked over a poxy vcd not burning properly, pulled my hair out, cursed and screamed, smashed and bashed!!! Kicked and spat!! F*ck that!! Is it really worth is??? No. Just buy a DVD burner and forget about VCD's!!!!!!!!! to me VCD's are just a bad memory . Even when they come out good the look bad during the action sequences (where it matters most). Ignore this if you want as Ive had a few. But these words I speak are true!
