What trade union represents workers in call centres? I am curious about this. Is it just me or do most call centres don't want unions?

There aren't any. I've worked in two call centres and one (xerox) forbade us joining any sort of union, and the other company it was just never mentioned, I think there is a union you can join as one of my team leaders was in one, but it wasn't recognised by the company.

What was the sanction if you did join one? AFAIK No-one can stop you from joining a union, and if they fire you its unfair dismissal.

Actually. the company can either prevent you from joining any union, or force you to join one specific union, as long as its clearly specified in your contract. It doesn't qualify as unfair dismissal, since you knew before hand, and it would probably be in your employment contract, it's totally legal.

Don't want to put a downer on anyone but I've worked in call centres as both Team Manager and Agent and they are god-awful places. Whoever said they were the modern equivalent of sweatshops for the middle classes got it spot on.

no one can stop you joining a union.

it is not illegal to a union.

a company can not stop you from joining a union.

in fact its illegal to stop you from either joining or talking to a join a union.

    HOWEVER

a company does not have to recognise a union. nor does it have to negotiate with a union. so if your union is in minorty, you may find yourself going out on strike with 2 other peopel, and the comapny doesnt give a ****. a union only works if you are united, strong and most of th eemployees are in the union,

unions are not the be all and end all

i was a shop steward for SIPTU for 2 years. i taught me lot, mostly never to be in a union again. i will never bein a union agin.
