Carnivale Finale

Have to say I really enjoyed this first season of Carnivale!
The finale kept up the great quality of the series, and gave us a few more hints as to where it's all headed. I liked the slow burning pace of the show; the feeling that there's just something epic waiting around the corner, and there's no need to rush it.The cast were all top notch in this initial run, I can't wait to see how it all pans out. Brother Justin's arc throughout the first season was generally the most interesting imo, but the finale finally gave us some good strong Ben Hawkins' bits, and the cliffhangers were excellent especially
Ben's meeting with management, his fatal showdown with Lodz.. Sophie in the burning trailer, and Ruthie taking her first breath of renewed life just as the credits rolled
All great stuff. I especially loved Brother Justin's speech over all the dire events @ the end. Heading towards Armageddon indeed.

I'd be very frustrated if it'd been cancelled, and all those questions were left hanging. Pity season 2 is so far away. It'll be late 2004 before HBO air it in America, so probably 2005 before TG4 get it. Anyway, least it's not cancelled :D

Good show. Agree that the pace of the show is apt, foreshadowing events to come. The last image of the episode was very haunting.

Carnivàle started off well but the slooooow pacing of the main storyline really got on my goat. We don't really know much more at the end of the season than we did at the end of the pilot episode.

The main problem is that we know what the finale to the entire show is going to be already - a showdown between Ben and Brother Justin - but the show is making us wait... and wait... and wait for that moment.

The episode where Justin invited the reporter to his sermon the next day had me thinking 'oh my God, he's going to kill everyone in the church' but no, it was just another dull scene that did little to advance the plot (and I mean little).

What's infuriating about the show is that if the story had enough turns it could be terrific - the acting, production and directing is superb. All it needs now is a gripping story and it could be great.

I think it's fair to say that we know their meeting is *key* to the series, but it doesn't have to be the finale by any means. Brother Justin & Ben could meet next season and change everything about what we expected from the arc.
I liked how 'Carnivale' doesn't feel rushed in telling the story, allowing the characters to develop more naturally rather than throw them all headlong into situations from the outset.
I've no doubt that the series would be much better viewed on DVD when there's a complete story i.e when it's finished. However, I'm glad that the writers clearly have the arc planned, and are being allowed by HBO to tell it as they want.
I'm sure the foundations layed in season 1 for the characters will more than pay off later in the series, like 'Babylon 5', when perhaps even the most trivial events become part of a larger story.

If you want instant gratification, there's always WWE!
