does anyone here still play the old-fashioned text-based muds? I have come across a few Irish players recently and was wondering if there are any PKers still on these boards.

Its a long time since I played one, used to love em in the mid 90's .... but TBH you need a LOT of people in a MUD to make it interesting, otherwise you killing and being killed by the same people over and over...gets boring and pointless

Go to one of the new games .... get killed and kill lots of people who you'll never cross paths with again!!

I play in a few of them. Never met Irish players though.

I suppose they are kind of attractive in that they are easy(ish), and you can play them in work (*cough*) and college without attracting too much attention. They don't require big machines either.

I'd be a fan of smallish games, though saying that the games I play on have 300 players on at a time. But by small I mean in the context of the post above - it is nice to know the people killing you. Someday you may get them back, you may get their children back, you may find an item that they need. It's nice to be able to plan revenge. It also gives the gameplaying experience a bit more .. character. Games where you just kill or get killed by random people who you never meet again tend to have a shorter term interest.

    Just my thoughts,

the other side of that coin is that you end up stalking each other, fun for a while until you get bored, he mightnt get bored of it however and do your head in.

I used to play a mud (cant for the life of me remember the name of it) that was based on middle earth, but it was distributed across multiple servers (some in America, some in Europe, all in colleges IIRC) ... twas very good ... you could play the good guys or the bad guys and there were hundreds on at all times of the day and night. Very newbie friendly - with higher levels needing to help lower levels a bit in order to progress themselves.

I had a sound scheme set up using triggers .... i.e. ANNIHILATES got one sound while barely tickles got another etc etc ... worked very nicely in Gmud .....

    ahhhhhh, those were the days

What mud has 300 players on these days? I'd have a look just out of interest

    For large muds try:

    http://www.medievia.com

    or

    http://www.achaea.com

Sites like http://www.mudconnector.com are a good place to start if you are interested in investigating.

You could also be aware of innovations like muds which support MXP, which allows the mud to play sound files, or even display graphics. ZMUD is the client of choice IMHO.
